Move protection

[edit]

The reason the village pump pages think they're protected is because they are, but only against page moves, using this new option that's been added to the protection feature. See Wikipedia talk:Protected page. I'll admit that it is a little confusing to figure out, and I guess this means that if you needed to really protect a move-protected page, you'd have to unprotect it first. --Michael Snow 17:44, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yes, if the unprotect page would alert people when it's move-only protection, that would be a more sensible design. I've found navigating through the history of the newly organized logs quite buggy compared to page and contribution histories, but for now I would hope fixing the blocking/unblocking problem is a higher priority. --Michael Snow 18:04, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Category:Arabic poets

[edit]

Thank you for telling me about it. There's no problem with the complete delete. There was only one poet in the category. It will be easy to recreate, and then I can go about populating it. I was very surprised when I saw that the category didn't already exist (more systemic bias in the Wikipedia?).

I have a question about another duplicate. According to Category:Substubs, there are two articles titled Altitude tent. I've done a little work trying to un-substub the article, so I've saved a copy just in case the same complete delete happens to that article. gK ¿? 22:20, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I wasn't implying that you weren't a helpful contributor to WP:RD; you're probably one of the most knowledgeable ones of the lot that answers questions, IMO. And I agree 100% with your sentiment towards people who don't do the obvious search before posting here; I get frustrated too. I'm half-tempted to put a prominent note on Template:RD header, but that probably wouldn't do much good (nobody reads that damn thing anyway). Until people get a clue, I hope we can keep things friendly -- even if only to reflect well on Wikipedia. Best wishes, David Iberri | Talk 06:03, Jan 9, 2005 (UTC)

I just read the question at WP:RD#installation and the first thing that came to mind was Oh god, RTFM! But your response was much more friendly, informative, and helpful. • Dear Wiki contributors, admins & sysops. You have been mislead by Curps. Please see that article in question and decide for yourselves if deletion is a correct Wiki thing to do. I have decided not to pursue the re-naming of Curps's article 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and through consultation with other helpful Wikis, I have decided to start a series of Asian Tsunami articles on my own ... there is freedom to initiate such a move right ? The articles in questions is proposed to drill deep in the subject in question. In Asian tsunami : The earthquake I have attempted to focus just on the earthquake that caused the Asian Tsunamis. In Asian tsunami : Time-line (currently vandalised by Curps), I have drilled down to the exact minutes to minutes account of the waves of deadly tsunamis. I will be added other article in the Asian tsunami series like the humanitarian aspects, current news & occurrences etc. because I think it is the right thing to do. kenkam 06:55, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

duplicate sub-categories

[edit]

Hi - I saw your response in Village Pump about an instance of duplicate subcats, posted a similar problem to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard which Gadfium took care of. The subcats (there are two) are now not listed multiple times in the supercat, but each is recursively listed in its own category. Gadfium annotated the post in the noticeboard about this, but the request has now been archived. Can you either look into the recursive categorization or let me know someone who might be able to? I'm sure Gadfium would be interested in an explanation of what the problem is as well. The affected categories are Category:Cities in Hyogo Prefecture, Category:Cities in Kagawa Prefecture. Thanks. -- Rick Block 14:56, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I see this problem has been fixed (or simply went away) for Category:Cities in Hyogo Prefecture. The other category (Category:Cities in Kagawa Prefecture) still has a problem. If you did something to the one category, please do it to the other. Thanks. -- Rick Block 04:48, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Schlockitude

[edit]

I did indeed miss your annoyed comment on talk:Schlock Mercenary. I've lately mainly been working on starting sleeping again, so my productivity's been just a bit impeded. I did not think that you were kidding or just shouting "Hey kids, get off my lawn!"

Now then, I'm forced to agree on the quality of the article, though not on the phrasing. Much of the text was added by a few astonishingly enthusiastic and perserving fans, who unfortunately are not very familiar with wiki standards. Even if the rewriter (yours truly) had been operating at normal efficiency, the content would still have been in considerable need of cleanup. However, I don't think it was a lost cause.

Keeping the detailed content on a separate, dedicated wiki is an excellent option, but not necessarily feasible here, the highly impressive Homestar Runner one aside - HR has a much larger fanbase, dwarfs SM in the amount of content it provides, etc. For the latter reason, having Schlock info good enough for the fans here shouldn't be an impossibility.

Here's what I'm planning to do: I'll definitely have a look around at Wikicities and similar sites. At the same time, I'll fish out the Schlock content Wikipedia had and start work on bringing it up to par. Once that's done, I'll add it either to a new, shiny Schlock-wiki, or back here, where it'll no longer shame the project. You, of course, are free to yell at me during any part of this undertaking. -- Kizor 17:54, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

My Apologies

Pacific typhoon season

[edit]

I'm thinking about VfD'ing 2004 Pacific typhoon season. It is far too large an area, surveyed by more than one source that have few English translations. I'm going to try to keep up with 2005 Pacific typhoon season on a private basis (It doesn't exist; I'll only put it up if I can keep up for a two week period) but I wanted your opinion on nuking 2004, and on maintaining 2005 at all. Maybe for the typoons, the best way would simply be a category? Part of the annoyance with doing *2004* is that there are few archives. I'm getting most of my information from forums, not from weather centers. Even Guam's hurricane center doesn't seem to keep archives of past storms on their website, which is why I think 2005 might be doable but 2004 is probably, at present, a lost cause. The best archives are the Unisys archives, and those are not exactly human readable. They're useful on a daily basis, but not when looking back over an entire year.

Just looking for input. Thanks! --Golbez 20:30, Feb 1, 2005 (UTC)

Names List

[edit]

Cyrius, I found that accusation terribly offensive. I have never and will never lie to such a great multitude of people, and I was enraged when you suggested that all my 20+ articles are lies and falsehoods. That accusation offended me greatly, and I don't know when my distaste for you will subside. Is it wrong to share your creative ideas on this site? That is what you implied by saying that I created the names list page to deliberatly mislead people, which couldn't have been less true. In the space of two months, I have contributed nearly three decades worth of information and you stab me in the back. Golbez was very courtious. I disagreed with him, but I felt respected by his dissenting remarks. Your comments were blunt, aggressive and respect took a back seat. Now if you don't want me to get so angry that me and three decade of hurricane info disappear into thin air, I hope you will take these dissatisfactions to heart.

Important. You are one of the contributors to Africastubmap.png. It is currently not tagged in accordance with Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags. It must be, so people can be certain of its legality. The Real Perfect Storm

[edit]

Cyrius, do you think the idea of a Perfect Storm (a Category 5 hitting Miami) is too much of an opinion to be an article?

-E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast

That's a fair point, Cyrius. New Orleans would probably be swamped under six feet of water with dykes breaking right and left. Andrew however, hit about ten miles south of Miami in a relatively underpopulated area. Homestead was leveled, but Miami was spared the brunt of the storm. The Great Miami hurricane of 1926 hit Miami dead on as a Category 4 and caused $100 million in damage in 1926 dollars. Using 2003 inflation and wealth normalization, that comes out to a mindboggalling $97 billion today and that was a four. But the New Orleans storm is an intriguing (and terrifying) idea. I shutter to think what the damage would be. Tropical Storm Matthew last year was a pitiful tropical storm when it hit near Dulac, Louisiana, burst a levee and flooded a whole neighborhood. I plan to ponder the placement problem in the near future.

-E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast

They have a good reason to be. With regards to the NHC, not only did Andrew destroy the aneometer, he destroyed the entire complex, which was just a regular building above ground back then.

Indefinite block

[edit]

Please reconsider your indefinite block of User:The Recycling Troll. There is no good evidence that this is user 142. I asked a developer to look into this, and Brion's response was:

It's not really possible to "establish" someone's identity given the information at our disposal.
What I can clearly say is that recent edits by The Recycling Troll on en.wikipedia.org have not come from an IP address in the 142.177.* range. Note that this is merely an absence of evidence for a purported claim of identity, and has no bearing on whether the account should be blocked for any actual behavior.[3]

While this cannot be used to establish with certainty that TRT is not 142, it certainly casts doubt on that assertion. Given that there is no actual evidence for this user as a reincarnation of a banned user, we must judge on the actual behavior of the user. There is no policy that allows an indefinite ban for "stalking", so even if it could be determined with certainty that this user was stalking, any measures to be taken would have to be determined by consensus.

This continuing ban/unban cycle will not solve anything, so I will not unban one more time. However, I do believe that this matter needs to be studied to determine what mistakes were made and how we can avoid them in the future. I would appreciate you cooperation in this. -Rholton 05:01, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

-- Thanks for replying. Would you agree that an indefinite block is quite different from a temporary block? How will this case be brought to a conclusion? In what sense in this a temporary block? Why can there not be some effort to build consensus on this, instead of insisting that individual admins can ban a user contrary to policy?

Please give this matter some additional thought. -Rholton 06:51, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

Dear Cyrius, I note that one of the reasons that you give for continuing to block this user is trusting David Gerard's judgement, I am not willing to unblock at this time - did you notice that David wrote Michael Snow has stated on WP:AN/I that I was wrong about The Recycling Troll being 142. I have accepted his expert opinion on the matter - David Gerard 00:35, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)?

I do not agree that these actions ... would justify requesting a restraining order out in meatspace, this is the equivalent of watching how your congressman votes and writing to them on every issue - it is not stalking to monitor someone's contributions to a single public website.

You may feel that the entire "policy" system is broken (your emphasis), but that does not give you license to ignore policy. In the absense of any reason to block this user I cannot agree that the 'suspect' be 'detained'. In 'meatspace' this would be the equivalent of a policeman being able to arrest and detain me without letting me know what law I had allegedly broken, what process (if any) for appeal there is, or what I could do about it.

If you would like to craft a policy against checking of admin's (or any other user's) edits, and subsequent further editing, I invite you to try to do so, but currently, there is nothing to see except a small group of admins who seem determined to ignore the rules.

Thanks, Mark Richards 08:05, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, I'm sorry that you feel that I misrepresented your opinions, I am staggered however, at the low regard that you seem to have for community made policy, which, after all, we are supposed to administer. I disagree that this user has done anything that deserves blocking, other than annoy a prominent user. This, in itself, is not a blocking offense. Rick annoys me a lot. I deal with it, I don't get a bunch of my friends together to form a lynch mob and cook up all sorts of unsubstantiated charges. Also, to be fair, the full quote from Jimbo said that we would change the rules if necessary, not that we would ignore them. Please, feel free to craft a policy change that makes blocking people for annoying others, or monitoring their edits acceptable. Mark Richards 17:31, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Question... about sentences in articles?

[edit]

Hello, I have noticed that you have edited two substubs that I created, due to not having "sentences." Since these were substubs and I neither claimed nor intended for them as complete articles (just a starting point, hoping others would come and add more information, since I know very little about some of these items,) I had left them that way since they were NOT complete (meant to resemble dictionary enteries at best...) is this against the rules or anything? Hi Cyrius - I've just restubbed a lot of the geo-stubs that you did a few hours back... any chance you could use a few of the more specific ones? Which article was it?

[edit]

Is it really that wrong to say that Involuntary settlements in the Soviet Union was the 500,000th article? Visual Fred offensive

[edit]

I thought Wiki was to hold all kind of info, offensive or not. The article may offend some but the only way to find it is to having heard of the term. IMO, the article is much less offensive than some other articles. I have tried to tone it down but anymore changes would be censoring.

The importance of pre-emptive redirects

[edit]
"Pre-emptive redirects" are of no value and have been candidates for speedy deletion for a long time. If Mr. Hardy wants policy changed, he can get a consensus to do so. His protection of the page was a blatant violation of the policy that one does not protect a page one is involved in a dispute over. -- Cyrius| 15:05, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have edited tens of thousands of Wikipedia articles. On many occasions I have created pre-emptive redirects. In some cases their value is very obvious (e.g., I see the someone created a redirect from "complex societies" to "complex society"; I've done the same thing hundreds of times). In other cases the question of their value or its lack is delicate and may require input from experts in the field. An obvious case being a redirect from a misnomer to a correct name. By that of course I do not mean to suggest that misnomers are NEVER appropriate article titles; the question of whether a misnomer is the right title is precisely the kind that may require expert input. The page I protected was nothing but an incitement to wholesale vandalism until I added a conspicuous warning against the "policy" of vandalising pre-emptive redirect pages. I realize some practitioners of that policy were judicious in their application of it, but the statement of the policy did not reflect that at all; it just incited unthinking vandalism. It actually encouraged the use of the word "broken" to refer to any redirect whose target does not exist! That is destructive of Wikipedia's purposes, to say the least. Michael Hardy 21:30, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

You have violated the no personal attacks policy by calling those you disagree with vandals. You are attempting to violate the Wikipedia:deletion policy by forcing us to keep things which are to be deleted.
I simply don't see how you can justify this behavior. The only thing destructive here is your hostile attitude towards others. -- Cyrius| 21:48, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I did not call any particular person a vandal. I called a particular practice vandalism. I also said a certain page was inciting vandalism. Also, the bigoted practice of calling pre-emptive redirects "broken" incites vandalism. Michael Hardy 22:07, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

If an action is vandalism, then the people who practice it are vandals.

That is true, and there is no person whom I have accused of engaging in that practice, nor do I know of any particular person engaging in it. Since I have never so accused anyone, I have not called anyone a vandal. Michael Hardy 22:26, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • If I may step in, I'm probably the person who annoyed Michael Hardy the most; yet, despite strong actions and reverts, no harsh words were ever exchanged. I don't think there's much of a point in pursueing this argument any further; we've already got two technical discussions going on, no need to include UserTalk pages as well... --Fbriere 22:34, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

After the rule that said redirects whose targets don't exist (called "broken" in your POV, apparently, but not in mine) may be speedily deleted, it said "however, SUCH redirects should not be deleted if ...." One of the exceptions was redirects from a plural to a singular, or from a misspelling to a correct spelling, or otherwise from an incorrect term to a correct one, when those would help prevent the later creation of duplicate articles. About this you wrote:

That isn't about broken redirects, it's a general statement primarily aimed at things like plurals and variant spellings. Broken redirects are still specifically speedily deleteable. -- Cyrius| 01:25, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I agree that it's not about BROKEN redirects, but it's obviously about REDIRECTS WHOSE TARGETS DON"T YET EXIST (among others, perhaps). Are you trying to say that those kinds of redirects should be speedily deleted? If not, why would you object to a qualification saying so in the rule about what you call "broken" redirects? Michael Hardy 02:15, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The definition of a broken redirect is patently obvious. There is nothing it can mean other than a redirect whose target does not exist. If you don't stop yelling and start behaving like a reasonable person, you're never going to convince me of anything. -- Cyrius| 02:24, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

OK, I wrote some words in capitals for emphasis; therefore I'm "yelling", so I guess I must be unreasonable. Right? But if you read what I wrote, you see that I gave specific arguments that you haven't answered.

And if by "broken" redirects you mean any redirects whose targets don't yet exist, then the rule that said "However, such redirects should not be deleted if..." plainly refers to them. And it said they should not be deleted if they may prevently later creation of duplicate articles by redirecting a plural to a singular or a misspelling to a correct spelling, etc. Michael Hardy 02:31, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Time to ban a vandalizer

[edit]

Hey Cyrius, I don't know if you've ever been involved in banning a vandal, but what User:Albanau just did to the Origin of Albanians page definitely deserves an immediate ban, just for the extremeness of this one action: he created a false blank page than redirected the article there, thereby deleting it (temporarily; it can be restored, I think). If you see the history of the Origins of Albanians page, you'll see that 95% of what he did there before was borderline vandalism anyway, because he concocted arguments without references and placed them in the article after continually being warned not to do so. He should be banned for what he just did today. Decius 08:42, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

How do you nominate someone to be banned? I think the situation has been handled: see User talk: RedWolf and User talk:Decius. Decius 08:47, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Bejauolais effect

[edit]

Hi, I see you think my article on Bejauolais effects is too technical, but it's a highly specific issue; I just created the page after running into the term on an Ada newsgroup and having to find out what it meant. I really don't know how to make it less technical; would an example do?

I don't want to make any major changes with the monobook design, but I HATE the left and right justification and would rather have the text only left justified (like the Classic skin?). Would you be able to help me do that? BlankVerse 16:31, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
