Disambig?

[edit]

I think that this should be the disambiguation page, and then we save Spyro the Dragon (game) for the first game. Tom Temprotran 01:01, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It might actually be better to have the disambig page at Spyro (it is currently a redirect to the Spyro character article), and this article discuss the first game in the series, as the article title is the proper title of that game (this is consistent with some other game articles, such as The Legend of Zelda.) --Stratadrake 01:48, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nov Clean up

[edit]

I deleted the list of enemies as it was a long and indiscriminate list WP:NOT. I also deleted the section telling players where all of the dragon eggs can be found in the levels. The info belongs on one of the wikigaming sites but not here Pnkrockr 16:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UBER AGREED. Had I been checking up on this article more often I'd have done it myself, indiscriminate lists must begone. --Stratadrake 04:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

December cleanup

[edit]

Hoo boy, I felt like editing first and asking questions later again. Summary of my latest edit is thus...

  • Reorganized sections; "Gameplay" first, "Story" later.
  • Note that much of the information presented each character describes their role in the game's gameplay, not in the game's narrative. This is why.
  • Removed various POV.
  • Spyro's inability to swim was not "fixed" in later games -- this implies that it was a flaw, which is an opinion. Just because later Spyro games featured underwater swimming does not mean that earlier games should be criticized for not having it.
  • Removed indiscriminate information, the stuff that would be more at home in a videogame strategy guide (which Wikipedia is not).
  • List of Sparx's colors and what they mean. If it's worth mentioning, then please integrate it into the article, don't just provide a list.
  • List of Gem color denominations.
  • Lists of levels within each world.
  • Removed the mention of flying levels. Yes, the levels are notable and should be mentioned, but the second-person references are simply unacceptable. I'm sure there's a decent version of their mention somewhere in this article's edit history, I'll go dig it up later.

--Stratadrake 01:26, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed that the 1990s article has a list of popular games and their releases, adn I was wondeirng if maybe Spyro could be considered one. It received favoravle views everywhere, and was a bestseller too. Think it's count? Abby724 01:34, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The decade articles contain lots of trivia, and it's hard to ascertain what's the most popular or whatever. I'd leave it out.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 14:07, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just looked at the US site from the external links in the hope of finding some evidence. There, under travel, it's called Gnasty's World. Google results for "spyro gnorc gnexus" also agreed with my observations. I'll edit the article accordingly. --Jonathanvt 12:40, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PocketStation

[edit]

The Japanese version uses PocketStation? It's not in the article. --200.103.117.40 16:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, see here: http://spyro.mozepy.com/ENTERTAINMENT/PocketStation.html I don't have the energy to add the information; maybe later, but feel free to beat me to it. --Larry Hastings (talk) 12:11, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Legacy Removed?

[edit]

Seriously, why did the legacy get deleted? This game has spawned tonnes of sequels and is the equal 26th best selling franchise? wtf? User:Crasnex 19 December 2007 —Preceding comment was added at 05:57, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Movie Adaptation

[edit]

Seeing as it actually states on the page that it has nothing to do with the original Spyro series but rather the "Legened of" or whatever they're calling it these days, I don't see why it should be mentioned on a page of the very first game, but rather should be mentioned on the 'Series' page. Thus, I'm deleting it seeing s I feel it's irrelevent. 212.219.254.158 (talk) 15:09, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:SpyrotheDragon.jpg

[edit]

Image:SpyrotheDragon.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

I don't think that really belongs in the article and it should be taken off. Anyone agree? Flamingtorch372 (talk) 19:16, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Music in Different Versions

[edit]

Just saying i've cleared up any confusion on the music between the US and PAL version. I got confused when reading about the music, here's the differences:

Just so you know i have (or did have until the disc snapped) the Australian PAL version of the game, and i accidentally ended up with presumably the US soundtrack on mp3, here are the differences:

I noticed the high caves music i have on mp3 is definently not the High Caves music i had in my game. And i found what was the high caves music in my game was actually the Beast Makers Alternate music in the US version and Vice Versa. I'm pretty sure the High Caves music in the US version is the Beast Makers Alternate in the PAL verison. So the High Caves and Beast Makers alternate music are just switched around.

I thought there was a couple more, but that's it, i hope this clears things up a bit. (GT4GTR (talk) 12:39, 4 June 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Reception

[edit]

Compared to its two immediate sequels, there's almost nothing involving the reception. We could use some more stuff about the reception of Spyro 1. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.167.16 (talk) 07:42, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About PAL re-release dates for PSN in Europe

[edit]

I haven't found any PSN re-release date, despite my long (and useless, as for now) search for the PAL region yet. I admit that it's mainly because I can't wait to play it on my PSP (same childish manners seen in my Kirby Super Star edits), but I think the article needs a PAL PSN release date too, and not only JP and US. It's not only a matter of envy, whether it's felt either by me or any other European retrogamer striving for the date; it's more of a matter of encyclopedic need. I don't know if I explained well what I feel, but... well, that's it. The only edit I've made is in the "Download" section, in which I've shown my worry just with one word, "sadly". If anyone knows the re-release date, please post it under the Download section, as well as under the game cover and let me know. (I still don't know how to sign my comment... can you do it in my stead?) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.57.27.53 (talk) 21:35, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit - I'm the same guy who got banned before, and the same one who has written this section of the talk page months ago. Sorry for this additional and still anonymous edit. Someone - not me - has edited the "Download" section of the article itself by stating, "available in PAL terrories". However, the template at the top claims the reverse, and still there's not any trace of the actual game in the European PSN either. Is said edit reliable? 19:06, 5 May 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.57.24.202 (talk)

Nope. And don't forget

Hey I noticed that one too and the download section says it's out in EU but the template at the top doesn't. And in the EU PSN there is no download for the game so plz delete that statement —Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.102.162.11 (talk) 06:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 7 May 2018

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Moved per consensus formed in this debate. See general agreement to rename this page as proposed and to consolidate the disambiguation to Spyro (disambiguation). Since ample notice was given on the appropriate talk pages, Spyro (series) will be moved to Spyro to accomodate consensus. Have a Great Day and Happy Publishing! This is a contested technical request (permalink). –Ammarpad (talk) 16:48, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - what should be proposed instead is to move Spyro (series) to primary and redirect Spyro the Dragon to it - there is no need for a separate disambiguation page when the series overview can act as it. --Netoholic @ 17:24, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Agree with Netoholic, we should make this follow the Sonic the Hedgehog series standard, with "Spyro the Dragon" redirecting towards the franchise/series, with disamg links at the top of the article pointing to the first game and the character. No reason to do what the OP suggested. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:29, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - The logic behind this is understandable. A DAB page for "Spyro The Dragon" is entirely unnecessary- Spyro already accomplishes this feat more extensively- and it isn't necessary for both of the similar page titles to have distinguishing parenthesis in them. Only one needs to do so in order for them to be separated. Because of this, I agree that this one should be renamed, with a distinguish template at the top to redirect to other pages like the series and character pages. Simply redirecting to "Spyro (series)" feels like an illegitimate solution to this, as it's not a primary identifier behind the property of "Spyro the Dragon"- arguably, the game moreso is. Sonic is a different situation, as the series and the game are equally known under the guise of "Sonic the Hedgehog", but "Spyro the Dragon" isn't the primary name of the series. There are several "Sonic the Hedgehog" games- Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3- and thus the series has the collective identity as "Sonic the Hedgehog". There was one game called Spyro the Dragon, and that was the first one. Everything else is different- "Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly", "Spyro: A Hero's Tale", "The Legend of Spyro". Even the two sequels weren't "Spyro the Dragon 2" and "Spyro the Dragon 3", they were "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage![/Gateway to Glimmer]" and "Spyro: Year of the Dragon". That's why it doesn't make sense in my view. The character, like "Sonic the Hedgehog," can be known as "Spyro the Dragon", and thus it makes sense, but the series' primary common umbrella name is "Spyro". Just my two cents though. Anyone agree??~~Tristan ("TheDisneyGamer") 23:27, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Recent games in the Sonic series do not have "the Hedgehog" as part of the title though (Sonic Forces, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Runners) so that whole argument is moot. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 07:53, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • I fully understand that, however, the series as a whole is still largely known as the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series whereas the Spyro games are generally known as... the Spyro games, and not the "Spyro the Dragon" games. Proof for this lies in the series' respective official logos; the Sonic logo says "Sonic the Hedgehog" whereas the Spyro logo simply reads "Spyro" and not "Spyro the Dragon", a fact carrying over as recently as with the logo for the Reignited Trilogy- which, by the way, is known as "Spyro Reignited Trilogy" and not "Spyro the Dragon Reignited Trilogy". There was a single game titled "Spyro the Dragon"- the series isn't known as the Spyro the Dragon series, not even outside of the official canon and among the general public. Sonic, admittedly, consists of mostly games without "the Hedgehog" but "Sonic the Hedgehog" is still what the series is both popularly and officially known by.
I'm clearly outnumbered here as it stands in terms of opinion but this is just an argument that I can't get behind. I see no issue with renaming this page and nixing the DAB. ~~Tristan ("TheDisneyGamer") 01:39, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This statement doesn't seem to fit with your vote above. Do you support the original move proposal shown at the very top of this section, or are you supporting the alternative given lower down? Maybe it would help clarify if you would explicitly describe what you want each page to be moved to. -- Netoholic @ 02:38, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Let me outline everything which I think should happen with each page relating to this ordeal:
  • This page ("Spyro the Dragon (video game)") be renamed to simply "Spyro the Dragon".
  • The page Spyro the Dragon as it is currently- a disambuigation page, to be precise- be blanked so it can be used as the namespace for what is this page, with Spyro already filling the gamut for what that page is meant to be.
  • Spyro the Dragon (character) and Spyro (series stay as they were previously.
  • Additionally, a distinguish template is added to this page which leads to Spyro the Dragon (character) (and maybe even Spyro (series)).
I hope this makes my thoughts more clear. For extra clarity, when I wrote "...this is just an argument that I can't get behind", I was talking about the opposing arguments framed by Netoholic and Dissident93, not my own argument that I had just made. Sorry for any confusion surrounding my wording, I suppose that did sound rather strange. Haha. ~~Tristan ("TheDisneyGamer") 04:29, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, thanks for the catch. Switching to Support moving the video game to Spyro the Dragon and moving the series to Spyro, though that may take another RM.--Cúchullain t/c 13:09, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify: I support moving Spyro the Dragon (video game) over Spyro the Dragon - there's no need for a dab page at that title as one already exists at Spyro. I also support moving Spyro to Spyro (disambiguation) and Spyro (series) to Spyro as a WP:CONCEPTDAB. The dab page Spyro (disambiguation) should be kept especially as it has an entry not related to this series.--Cúchullain t/c 14:22, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Release date should be changed to September 9, 1998

[edit]

I put in a lot of time to dive back into reports from the era and came to conclude that the original Spyro the Dragon game was actually released on September 9, 1998, not September 10th.

Insomniac Games conducted a live chat session dated September 11, 1998 on which they claimed that the game was released "two days ago." https://web.archive.org/web/20000830011945fw_/http://www.spyrothedragon.com/chattran1.html

IGN attended PlayStation's third anniversary party in Las Vegas on September 9, 1998 which also served as the game's launch party. (Source: An article from September 10, 1998 claiming that the party was "yesterday.") https://www.ign.com/articles/1998/09/10/is-sony-pulling-the-wool-over-our-eyes

There's also an IGN article posted on September 9, 1998 which claimed that "Spyro the Dragon ships today." https://www.ign.com/articles/1998/09/09/spyro-rolls-into-las-vegas

Lastly, despite listing September 10, 1998 as the game's release date, Insomniac admitted that they are unsure about it, and are only using it internally. https://twitter.com/spyrouniverse/status/1171127557242200064
