[edit]Retired this morning
[edit]As I have become increasingly alarmed by bad-faith editing from anonymous IPs becoming too much of a distraction for serious editing, so much so I have truly begun to dread doing any work here, I have decided it is best to quit Wikipedia. Part of the problem is admins pretending not to see the problem, or attacking serious editors who raise the alarm, and that just compounds it. It's part of a growing pattern I have felt as an experienced editor, that those of us who want to do professional-grade work are being ground down and driven out by a platform that seems to encourage gameplay over serious editing. Sometimes even this gameplay pretends to be serious, with bad-faith actors who have figured out how to make their edits look proper when in reality they are destructive.
Further issues I see are increased unchecked POV pushing in articles, particularly history-related ones, as well as the usually unspoken but very clear bureaucratic animus against WikiProjects, especially at a time they are needed more than ever to focus the work.
There are just too many problems now to work against, and it seems in many areas that editors have simply vanished. The pool of editors is obviously dwindling, and the feeling that I'm having to carry the load of those who've left is unsettling. This is supposed to be a joyous volunteer site for doing interesting, productive work, but today's reality is it just feels like grueling, agonizing work for no remuneration, with very little joy.
Unfortunately, I feel that Wikipedia is going down the tubes, and I'm just too small of a voice to help avert this downfall. I'm going to work on things that are much more uplifting, where I can make more of a difference, and get more back for my hard work, including joy. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! - Hi Stephen,
- This is such sad news. I read this and started to cry. You are what is great about Wikipedia. Can you please email me and I will give you my phone number so we have a chat? Derosasongs@gmail.com You are making such a difference. It is discouraging when people don't take this seriously but your bright light only shines brighter when a world like this gets darker. Whatever you do, you are going to make a difference because that is who you are. I am sorry that you have lost the joy in this but I do understand. Please let's have a conversation. You are needed. You are a world changer! Your friend, Annointed777 (Annointed777 (talk) 00:53, 7 October 2024 (UTC))
Tech News: 2024-41
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- Communities can now request installation of Automoderator on their wiki. Automoderator is an automated anti-vandalism tool that reverts bad edits based on scores from the new "Revert Risk" machine learning model. You can read details about the necessary steps for installation and configuration. [1]
Updates for editors
- Translators in wikis where the mobile experience of Content Translation is available, can now customize their articles suggestion list from 41 filtering options when using the tool. This topic-based article suggestion feature makes it easy for translators to self-discover relevant articles based on their area of interest and translate them. You can try it with your mobile device. [2]

Updates for technical contributors
- It is now possible for
<syntaxhighlight>
code blocks to offer readers a "Copy" button if thecopy=1
attribute is set on the tag. Thanks to SD0001 for these improvements. [3] - Customized copyright footer messages on all wikis will be updated. The new versions will use wikitext markup instead of requiring editing raw HTML. [4]
- Later this month, temporary accounts will be rolled out on several pilot wikis. The final list of the wikis will be published in the second half of the month. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 11 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Guidance on how to update the code is available.
- Rate limiting has been enabled for the code review tools Gerrit and GitLab to address ongoing issues caused by malicious traffic and scraping. Clients that open too many concurrent connections will be restricted for a few minutes. This rate limiting is managed through nftables firewall rules. For more details, see Wikitech's pages on Firewall, GitLab limits and Gerrit operations.
- Five new wikis have been created:
