New articles board and the bot feed

[edit]

As it was created I have setup a bot feed for the new Cricket related articles and set up a simple board for the announcement of new articles. Feel free to develop or remove the additions Alex Bakharev 11:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:AlexNewArtBot - New Article Bot

[edit]

Hi, I am in the trial runs of the User:AlexNewArtBot (see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/AlexNewArtBot). The bot reads all the new articles for a day and puts suspected Cricket-related articles into User:AlexNewArtBot/CricketSearchResult, the articles are suppose to be manually put into the portal page and/or removed if irrelevant. Or whatever you want to do with them.

The list of rules are in User:AlexNewArtBot/Cricket, there is also the log on the User:AlexNewArtBot/CricketLog explaining the rules that sent an article to the search results (the log is cleared every day, so try to look into the history of the log). Please contact me if you are interested in the fine tuning of the rules

That is all. Any suggestions are welcome. Alex Bakharev 11:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A belated thanks Alex. A useful tool. —Moondyne 02:05, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ICC Cricket Ratings

[edit]

The Cricket portal page is missing the key ICC cricket ratings(The official ratings), for test & ODI. We need to include that either as a separate Rankings Section, which could include

  • Team rankings - Test & ODI
  • Player Rankings - Test & ODI, batsman, bowlers and All-rounders

or we can just include it in the featured lists..

Vinwe 07:45, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Back in 2005, this was the very first portal in the Portal: namespace, and one of the first featured portals. Things have since gone a bit stale, and I think that now it's time for an update. To that end I have been working on Portal:Cricket/Redesign. It's by no means a finished work, but it gives the gist of what I am aiming for.

With your approval, I'd like to merge the redesigned page into the main space. I plan on moving the content that is currently on the portal page and not in the redesign onto a subpage which will be prominently linked - in a similar manner to Portal:Australia for example. I'm also planning on implementing automatic methods of keeping content fresh where possible, and keeping the rest updated myself (any help of course appreciated!). It will be easier to implement the rest once the main portal page is updated.

I hope this is too everyone's liking, but please do leave your comments and criticisms (or just go and improve it yourself!). If there's no opposition, I'll go ahead and merge into the main portal page. Cheers, →Ollie (talkcontribs) 01:30, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea and work Ollie. I've been thinking about this myself recently but am pleased you've started. Are you planning on using the box portal skeleton framework? It has a random content feature built in. See Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions. I do like the idea of an "On this day..." section; cricket lends itself to having a calendar of events. I'm all for a change and what you've put up looks good. —Moondyne 02:01, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Ollie, if you don't mind can I try a few things, and If you don't like it you could just remove/revert it back to you version. Is that Ok? Anyways, it looks good so far.--THUGCHILDz 02:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks chaps. I was aiming for a similar idea to the box skeleton thingamy, though with a bit of a different look and feel. It definately needs to be modularised/transcluded in a similar way though - I thought this would be easier to do when everything is in the place it will end up. THUGCHILDz (and anyone else for that matter), feel free to have a play... this is a wiki after all ;) →Ollie (talkcontribs) 03:07, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it a good idea, to have a subpage for the some of the things that are likely to change often like "In the News", "Did you know", "On this day" and "Current cricket". We can like {{Portal:Cricket/In the News}} and set that under the section so we don't have to edit the portal everytime instead just edit the subpage. So does anyone think we should do that or should we just edit the portal everytime?--THUGCHILDz 03:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, thats what I was thinking. Something like:

  • pre-done leads & photos for the featured articles. Either schedule this for rotation or set up a random FA generator. Same idea for the selected picture.
  • sub-pages for In the news, Did you know, Current cricket, Featured content
  • an 'archive' of On this day - we can set the portal to pull in the right day automatically.

Ollie (talkcontribs) 03:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC) →Ollie (talkcontribs) 03:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good so far (even though the colour scheme is a little curious). On this day sections do seem to be popular but involve a lot of work. It took more than six months to comprehensively build up Portal:Australia/Anniversaries. Good luck,--cj | talk 04:09, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The colours would be better if we had a single colour design for all the boxes, which I think is what the box portal skeleton requires anyway. —Moondyne 04:14, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the rankings of the teams but I kept it up to top 10 so it doesn't get to big. Also, I changed the color of the "cricket" section to blue because I was kind of thinking like the top being the sky, and then the brown being the pitch and the green being the field although the pitch is supposed to be in the middle. :) --THUGCHILDz 04:33, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice idea.

  • On my display, the first image is not tall enough (white - well, blue - space above and below); and there is no gap between the end of the first box and next two parallel boxes below: indeed, the boxes below overlap slightly.
  • I like the Test and ODI rankings. They could be copied to a template, and transcluded in ICC Test Championship, ICC ODI Championship and here.
  • WP:CRIC has many featured lists. May I suggest adding a "featured list" section - like the featured article one and the featured picture one, not just a list: this works using "includeonly" and "onlyinclude" and "noinclude" tags. (see Wikipedia:Featured content)
  • Are the featured articles, images, etc, going to be fixed or rotate somehow? Some portals have code to pick them from a list randomly, or rotate weekly, or whatever. (again, see Wikipedia:Featured content)

But a great start. -- ALoan (Talk) 10:59, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments.

  • Internet Explorer - bain of my life sometimes! I will try and sort these issues out.
  • Featured list is a good idea. I have seen one idea of showing the same list for a week, but with different rows from it each day.
  • Not sure whether I like the idea of random featured content or not. I think I'm leaning in favour of having it update itself, say once a week. Having a regularly scheduled change means that readers will (hopefully) check back often. I'm open to having my mind changed though!

Ollie (talkcontribs) 11:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't mention the idea of the rankings tables in a separate template that can be used twice :) I have done it now - what do you think?
The problem with weekly changes is that there will be an ongoing maintenance overhead, either setting up several weeks in advance in one go and coming back later, or (worse) updating them weekly. Speaking from experience at P:UK, it is easier to set up a list (that can be expanded later) and setting upt he page to select from the list randomly. That way, the reader always sees something new, and there is little maintenance. -- ALoan (Talk) 13:24, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'm with ALoan in terms of the featured material being randomly selected because otherwise it becomes a maintenance issue. And the template for the ranking is good too.

So when are we going to move this redesign into the portal?--THUGCHILDz 00:16, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are a few bits I want to put in place before we "go live". All being well, I plan to do these tomorrow. Then, assuming everyone else is happy, I will copy it over. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 02:38, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done

[edit]

I've moved the redesigned portal into the main space now. Work continues! I'll try and get some short explanatory notes written up as well, just to clear up where everything is and how it works (in case it's not completely obvious). Meanwhile, if anyone is twiddling their thumbs, there are plenty of redlinks in Portal:Cricket/On this day that need completing! →Ollie (talkcontribs) 19:11, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

__NOEDITSECTION_

[edit]

Nice work - congratulations. Is there a reason for having this and stopping edit links in each box? —Moondyne 06:28, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tried taking it out - the edit links appear, but don't work, presumably because of the way the pages are transcluded. I will look into it at some point. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 19:30, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need MS Dhoni's ppics

[edit]

I need to put up a pic for Mahendra Singh Dhoni article. But I can't find any good images. What is a god places to look for legal images of cricketers? Also is Portal:Cricket good place to ask for such help? Shabda 04:26, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You might be better taking this to WT:CRIC. —Moondyne 13:28, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've setup the framework and added a few random entries for this as well a Portal:Cricket/This day in cricket page. Unfortunately it looks like crap unless every day has an entry, so if anyone has any anniversaries to add, please do. Once its substantially populated, it could be transcluded into the main portal page. —Moondyne 08:45, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cricinfo have a similar anniversary page for every day. [1] This one is for 8 August. A page for every day can be found through the links. While we shouldn't be dependent on Cricinfo, it is a good starting point and will be helpful in the short term. GizzaDiscuss © 10:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I created Portal:Cricket/On this day when I updated this page. I gave up fairly quickly as I decided it was too massive a task, but there are a few days there that you can use. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 11:25, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is important we do all of August first for obvious reasons. We can do the other months later on. GizzaDiscuss © 11:28, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grrr. I should have asked first before embarking on this. I do like your full year view Ollie - much nicer that the calendar view which I copied off portal:Australia/Anniversaries IMO. I'll work on merging the two formats now and try to keep the best of each. Thanks. —Moondyne 16:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats

[edit]

Just noticed all the good work that's been done here. Well done to you all. --Dweller 09:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spoken articles

[edit]

Hi to everybody in the portal. Just to let you know, I'm currently preparing a spoken-word version of the Cricket article, which should be ready in the next few days. I hope to do more cricket-related articles in the future as well. Hassocks5489 12:17, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wisden Cricketers of the Year

Should there be a template for Wisden Cricketers of the Year as it would be good and I can't seem to find one DIPPY (talk) 19:15, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Croatian Cricket Federation

List of cricketers

[edit]

I can't find a list of all cricketers who attended the ODI-World-Cups. And a list of cricketers who won the most ODI-World-Cups. Where can i get such a list? I don't found anything at www.cricinfo.com/ Thanks! :-) 77.20.121.140 (talk) 15:54, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found it: http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;final_type=1;orderby=matches;result=1;template=results;trophy=12;type=fielding 77.20.107.74 (talk) 13:03, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how two interwiki links for Malayalam coming here. One link is correct and other one is wrong(which is pointed to ml:Portal:Cricket/Featured) please remove this link. The correct Link is ml:കവാടം:ക്രിക്കറ്റ് --Kiran Gopi (talk) 07:05, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have several concerns that this portal no longer meets the current Featured portal criteria.

  • There is only one featured list used, Tendulkar's centuries, and given the choice available, it should be easy to get this up to a decent number (10+)
  • Only one picture? Again, there must be more pictures that can be used
  • Only one batch of DYKs? Again, there must be more that can be used
  • The news hasn't been updated for a few months, nor have the ICC rankings.
  • (Less of an issue, although if you're doing things...) Can other articles be added to the "selected article" section beyond the 10 already there?

I'll be happy to help improve the portal, although I'm not going to do all the work myself; it would be a good idea to look at some of the more recently featured portals to get ideas on the layout, coding, possible improvements (a "selected quotation" box, perhaps?) at the Featured portals log. Random subpages are the way forward, to avoid having to do manual updates... BencherliteTalk 18:38, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did anything come of this concern? It still looks pretty much like a backwater here, but I don't know that portals are such a priority these days... Johnlp (talk) 00:12, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It really does not look a featured portal. Very unupdated. --Extra 999 (Contact me) 08:42, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have donesome work, but it still a mess. --Extra 999 (Contact me) 09:41, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple countries

[edit]

My Doubt: if a player played for more than one country, should the years (for example 20**-20##) be written in the infobox?
aGastya  ✉ let's talk about it :) 10:25, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Generalisation

[edit]

Hello! I wished that all the countries playing cricket (and having that specific article: example Australia national cricket team) have one generalisation. That is all have a section of Current Squad. So the sub-heading must be the same. Because for England it is Personnel, for West Indies it is Squad.
It should have a common heading to avoid certain confusions (I did not know meaning of Personnel though). But Uniformity would be great!
In explicit way: Can I have a Yes to modify the sub heading of current squad to a specific term?
aGastya  ✉ Dicere Aliquid :) 23:49, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I suspect you'll not get much response here as this is a bit of a backwater these days. But if you ask the same question at WT:CRIC you may get real discussion. Thanks. Johnlp (talk) 00:20, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cellphone usability

[edit]

This portal is unusable from a cellphone. Simicich — Preceding unsigned comment added by Simicich (talkcontribs) 23:58, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Simicich: Agreed. The first problem is that the rankings tables remain aligned side-by-side even when the window/device is narrow. Previewing the portal with the rankings removed, the next problem is that the half-width boxes stay side-by-side. Most portals convert those to a single-column format on a narrow window/device. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:46, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
