Thanks for the article about Queen's Park. I'm very fond of the place myself and would appreciate any comments you might have about this article of mine. I have a picture of the legislature which I will upload and insert tomorrow. Trontonian 03:49, 9 Jan 2004 (UTC)

 • Thanks a lot. I don't live in Toronto so I don't get to experience the park much, but I found it a nice haven in the heart of the city. The picture looks good. Timc 21:16, 14 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Timc: I just put the commas back in the SI base unit article, in accordance with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. I too would prefer spaces since they are less ambiguous than commas are, but consistency is better. —Bkell 18:12, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

 • Oh, I wasn't aware that this was the case in the manual. Timc 20:58, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

The NASCAR mediawiki is nice, but is it needed when we have List of NASCAR race tracks? I suppose I could see a use, but it's quite ... large. :) --Golbez 21:48, 27 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking along the same lines, particularly since the two articles I saw it added to -- Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen International -- do host a NASCAR race, but are hardly known primarily for those events. Is someone going to add a similar block of the IRL, Formula One, Sports Car, etc. races to those pages? I think some perspective may be in order. Rdikeman 13:44, May 28, 2004 (UTC)
You're probably right. We can undo that. I guess I got carried away. --Timc 16:03, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed that section from all of the pages that it was on. I also added List of NASCAR race tracks to any that did not have it. Is that okay? --Timc 16:16, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent solution and totally appropriate! Your diplomacy is greatly appreciated. :-) Rdikeman 18:04, May 28, 2004 (UTC)
Oh yes, quite okay, I meant to add that to them too. As we add more racing leagues (IRL, ARCA, etc) those should have track list links added as well. In fact, I think I know what I might work on tonight... List of IRL race tracks :) While we're at it, do you have any suggestions for more information to put in the tables I put on some of the track pages? --Golbez 18:08, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
How about the year they opened? --Timc 00:17, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I note that you changed the table on Indianapolis Motor Speedway from HTML to Wikitable. I thought of doing this once, but figured not much space was saved, though it is nice to not have to deal with countless td/trs. Just wondering, what caused you to make that decision? Uniformity by using the wiki markup? --Golbez 20:19, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I did it as an experiment, and since it is nice not to have the td/trs, and it looked pretty much the same, I left it. I'm trying to use the wiki markup as much as possible. I don't think it saves very much space. --Timc 20:22, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Excellent Waterloo Region maps, sir! I was planning something like that myself, but I haven't the software or knowledge to really tackle it.

Well done, they add that proper 'cachet' to the articles. ;-) Radagast 18:26, Jun 23, 2004 (UTC)

Java

[edit]

Hi. Please disambiguate "Java" on your user page. e.g. Java. Thanks. RedWolf 05:11, Jun 26, 2004 (UTC)

No problem. I salute your efforts. --Timc 05:13, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations!

Congratulations, Dad! RickK 18:53, Jul 10, 2004 (UTC)

Peculiar asterisk

[edit]

Hello, I just wondered what the asterisk in category links might mean. I noticed you entered such an asterisk in List of home computers, like this: . Please enlighten me. --Wernher 23:46, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I put the asterisk in so that it appears at the top of the categories page, rather than under "L". I have seen others do this, and I think it makes sense to have "List of" pages appear at the top. --Timc 11:57, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Aha, thanks for that nice little tidbit of knowledge. "A day when something's learned is a day in life with meaning" -- a microphilosophy of mine. :-) --Wernher 22:53, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Golden Horseshoe

[edit]

I see you changed pink to green, which is fine...but the map is still in pink (*grin*). Oh, and by the way, congrats on the new baby! Bearcat 19:48, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

 • Okay, scratch my comment. My browser just wasn't reloading the updated image. Sorry about that. (The pink seemed to contrast fine when I made the map, I guess because the image was bigger than it is on the site. You're right, the green does work better.) Bearcat 20:06, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

hand slapped

[edit]

Ok, I replaced all the articles with ones written myself. I din't see the copyright at the bottom of the page I was ripping off.

Yes, I saw that. Sorry, but I copied the content to the temporary subpages and reinstated the copyright violation notices. I think that's the correct way to do things. What will happen is that after the required period (I think it's 7 days), the temporary page will be moved to the main page.
If you read some more about copyrights, you'll find that there doesn't need to be a copyright notice for text to be copyrighted. Pretty much any recently written text you find will be copyrighted unless it is explicitly stated otherwise. --Timc 19:37, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Cheers

[edit]

Cheers. I feel well embarrassed now. Just glad someone’s watching out for the idiots (i.e me) who slip up

[edit]

Hi Timc. Thanks for the explanation behind User:Soloist's /Temp pages. The way page moves are handled by the software sure makes it hard to track things like this. Thanks again for clarifying. --Diberri | Talk 21:20, Aug 25, 2004 (UTC)

The... articles

[edit]

I had intentionally removed these /Temp articles (together with the original copyvios) because I thought we generally didn't have the "The" in article titles? Could you please enlighten me why you recreated these redirects? (This is a serious question - I suppose you do have a reason, but don't see it, and so I'm wondering whether my understanding is somewhat off.) Lupo 13:47, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

No, my understanding is probably off. There were some links to the "The" pages. I didn't see why they couldn't be there. Please feel free to do what you wish. --Timc 13:49, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Well, it's no big deal. I had overlooked that Preston linked to these articles. Had I seen that this morning, I'd have changed the Preston article accordingly. Lupo 13:54, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I wasn't sure if I should do it when I did, but I was being bold, and what's done is done. :-) I don't think I'll do it again. --Timc 13:55, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Cheers for the work you did on the Mr. W.H. page. I'm very new to Wikipedia, and I really should have cleaned it up myself. So sorry about that, and thanks for the work you did!

Userpage vandalism

[edit]

Hi there, Timc! Thanks for diligently reverting the recent Buddha-related vandalism on my userpage. How odd, indeed :-) By the way, belated congratulations on your newborn son! Best wishes, Diberri | Talk 21:47, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)

As a token of my gratitude, I've ever-so-diligently disambiguated links to Pascal and BASIC on your userpage. *Pats back* :-) --Diberri | Talk 21:51, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)
Hey, thanks dude. --timc | Talk 00:13, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Parliament seating charts

[edit]

I noticed back in July you altered the parliament seating charts to put the governing party in the "front" of the house, and it only occured to me now that you actually put them in the rear. Remember, the governing party sits at the speakers right, so the front of the house is on the left of the charts. Or am I mistaken? Earl Andrew 21:25, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Actually, if you read the history entry, I changed the image to put the Official Opposition at the front of the house. That seemed right to me—is it? In the pictures, the Government is on the right at the front of the house; if the Government occupies more than half the seats, then they carry over at the back of the other side. I guess I need to watch more CPAC to see what really goes on there. --timc | Talk 10:42, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Oh stupid me. Earl Andrew 02:23, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Actually, government overflow sat at the front of the House next to the Speaker during (at least) the 35th and 37th parliaments. The reason for this is because the Leader of the Opposition sits across from the Prime Minister and the PM sits 12 seats down from the speaker... with a small official opposition party, if it started at the front of the house, its last seat would be closer to the fron than the PM. Hope that that is helpful. -- Jord 18:36, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

about mathNEWS (not wikipedia related)

[edit]

I am a former staff of mathNEWS. I read an article in today's issue of mathNEWS and that they need someone to help writing a wiki to replace their prodution system. Can you or someone you know can help in this? Mail Jim Morrison (ja2morri at uwaterloo.ca) for details.

SYSS Mouse 01:16, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi there. I see you've uploaded that picture a few times...but I think that it's still not working :S. If you still have a copy of it, could you please try uploading it again? Thanks. -Frazzydee| 14:28, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I know, and I have since lost it. I'll try to make up a new one. --timc | Talk 14:32, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Adminship

[edit]

Recently I did some analysis of contribution history for Wikipedia, the fruits of which are at Wikipedia:Another list of Wikipedians in order of arrival. As I reviewed the list, I noted that there are about a dozen longtime contributors who have not been made administrators. You are one of them. Accordingly, I would like to nominate you for adminship, with your permission. If you would appreciate such a nomination, please let me know on my talk page. If you do wish to decline, a note so saying would also be appreciated, though not necessary. Kindest regards, The Uninvited Co., Inc. 20:48, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations, Tim!

[edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 22:34, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Willie Copp

[edit]

1) Thanks for fixing my date typo in Care in the Community

2) Could you have a quick look at Willie Copp - I'm not sure if it is real, or maybe should be VfD?

Election project

[edit]

I dont mind the idea for a wiki-project. So long as that it spans not just Canadian elections, but provincial and municipal as well. Just let me know when it is set up, or if you need help setting it up. Earl Andrew 02:53, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I had never heard of wiki-projects before your note, so I know nothing about them, but it sounds like a good idea. Kevintoronto 15:10, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

 1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
 2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. It's important to know, even if you choose to do anything so I don't keep asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 14:39, Dec 3, 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

NASCAR WikiProject

[edit]

Hello. I'm starting a WikiProject NASCAR and, since you seem to know a lot about NASCAR and have written some of the articles there, I thought you might be interested in helping. There's a lot of good information there, but it isn't very well organized and theres still a lot missing (driver bios, team info, etc.). If you can help, stop on by! Recury 18:45, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Golden Horseshoe (Ontario). Hi Tim. I added Ontario because I thought most people outside Canada, indeed Ontario, would not really appreciate where this was. I was searching under Category Metropolitan areas and saw Golden Horseshoe. Every other metropolitan area mentioned the city or geographical area except Golden Horseshoe. Disambiguation is of no use unless there are two places with the same name (maybe there are!). I considered adding (Canada) in parentheses, then opted for Ontario, as this is frequently done for places with the same name. Adding a qualifier does not affect the original name any more than adding a qualifier to a personal name e.g. David Thompson (cartographer). However, if you feel strongly about it, you can reverse it. It is interesting that the Canadian Oxford Dictionary attributes the "golden" part of the name to the region's wealth, not the lights seen from the air.--BrentS 03:47, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
