Ambulance ride

[edit]

She didn't paddle the whole way back to shore by herself. Holt pulled her back a little of the way...and they didnt rush her to the hospital right away. Alana went knocking on doors and luckily she found a perimedic and he rewrapped her "stub". Then the ambulance came after they called and she was rushed to the hospital and went right into surgery! and that is all i have to say.

reply

Actually, The Blanchard's phoned for an ambulance, but it was taking to long to get to the beach. So they put Bethany in the back of a pickup truck and met the ambulance halfway. This fact was taking out of her Book, so it is verifiable to be true. Ncix 14:25, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Word?

[edit]

I have edited with a friend her friend's father to read (see bold) with a friend and her friend's father. I assumed that "and" was the missing word, but I wasn't familiar with this story or this young lady before coming across this article, so I have no idea who was actually there.

I'd like to call people's attention to this edit, in case this assumption was incorrect. Mip | Talk 12:43, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changed "Her Friend" to her name...Alana

Question abut competition

[edit]

Here's a quote: In this competition, she placed 1st in the "13-under girls", 1st in the "17-under girls," and 2nd in the "12-under boys" division at the Volcom Puffer Fish contest. The "boys" one obviously needs to be clarified by someone familiar with this contest — are girls allowed to participate in that one anyway or what... --Lenoxus 03:05, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bethany started surfing at age...?

[edit]

According to the official Bethany Hamilton website, Bethany started surfing at age 4. I can't make a link (it is a flash site), but here is how you get to the fact.

Shark attack and recovery

[edit]

This is supposed to be an NPOV encyclopedia entry, not (a) a clinical description of every moment of the attack, or (b) a testament to a brave girl's personal relationship to her savior, or (c) her myspace fan page. Her web site is conveniently linked at the bottom of the page for any details of her "wonderful story" that are not encyclopedic.

I have removed the fact the October 31 is Halloween, the names of her friends, the length of the shark, the percentage of blood she lost, the name of the hospital, the name of the physician who treated her, her father's name, the anecdote about her father's scheduled knee surgery, the name of the shurch she attends, and the name of her lord and savior.

Please justify the inclusion of details like this. Jer ome 16:01, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that all of Wikipedia is NPOV, and this is NOT her fan site. On the issue of her friends names, I believe it is important to list the names because it adds credibility to this wiki and the possibility to link to other wiki's in the future. As for the hospital, if we are infact going to mention that she went to the hospital, and we know infact which hospital it happened to be, then why not put that in there? Her fathers name, same reason as here friends names stated above. physician who treated her, we do not "need" to list this, or the fact that he knew Bethany personally. about her father's scheduled knee surgery? I believe this is a coincidence that should not be left out of consideration. As for Bethany religion in God, I believe we had a neutral stance on this before, only stating what she believed (which was taken out of her book and website). I do not believe we should remove facts from this story (such as, names and the size of the shark)because they add creditability. If someone was writing a paper on Bethany, these basic facts would not be found on this wiki.

I am open to further discussion, and thank you for expressing your views. Ncix 19:58, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the following from the section about her recovery: "Bethany Is a great example about when there are bumps in the road you just drive over them like they are nothing. Meaning if something big like Bethany's attack happens to you just go on with your life as if it were normal. Remember everything that happens, happens for a reason"

Her story is truly inspring and she is indeed a great role model, however this is not the type of text that belongs in a Wiki article. Vaginsh 03:03, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Film adaptation

[edit]

FYI...if the film production can be confirmed, and if it is a notable company, we may be able to create a new article. —Viriditas | Talk 01:12, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Her website says more info will be available in May. Her other movie (Heart of a Soul Surfer, a 31 min DVD which I have not seen) however has an abundance of information available because it has already been released. I agree we should make an article for this new movie. Ncix 03:34, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's playing here in Maui, this week. —Viriditas | Talk 05:02, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discography

[edit]

Does anyone have a source for Discography? I believe it is at this point safe to remove it as I have tagged it as unsourced material 6 months ago and we still do not have a source. Ncix (talk) 18:16, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard a clip of one of the songs..they played it on my radio station. It was pretty good.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.90.145 (talk) 07:58, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Homeschooling?

[edit]

There's nothing in the article about homeschooling, so that category will need to be removed unless info supporting inclusion is added. I will check back in the next week. Cgingold (talk) 21:52, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

THey forgot to talk about the movie soul surfer. It is exactly like her story sparing no details. Also her best friend Alana was a surfer too. Bethany said in an interview she'll surf forever and she wouldn't reverse what happend to her the accident made her stronger

Another article...

WHAT denomination of Christianity?

[edit]

There is no such thing as "Christian;" there are only types of Christianity. Anybody who has compared a Quaker with an Evangelical knows that. So, to say she is "Christian" means nothing. What KIND of Christian is she? With what theology does she associate? Since the movie makes religion such a big deal, this would be really nice to know. 71.38.254.137 (talk) 00:31, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Of course there is "such thing as Christian." Yes, there are denominations of Christianity. I believe she is non-denominational. I haven't read her book, but it isn't mentioned in the movie. It really doesn't matter — but she is definitely evangelical. Musdan77 (talk) 05:01, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a truly burning desire to know, send her an e-mail through her website. If you also want to better Wikipedia, ask that she have that information on her website so that we can put a link to it.Wzrd1 (talk) 22:47, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Christian - Christians (/ˈkrɪstʃən, -tiən/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) are people who follow or adhere to Christianity, a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.- Wikipedia under Christians. Bethany Hamilton's parents were listening on a regular basis to Chuck Smith's teaching tapes, Calvary Chapel's, which is a Non-Denominational Branch of Evangelical Christianity. Bethany was a regular attender of "Rad Night," a Calvary Chapel North Shore Church event. Look up the article on the Internet from 2008 in Calvary Chapel Magazine. Bethany Hamilton is the type of Christian that says they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which any Christian Denomination, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant, some followers may tell you they do too.Easeltine (talk) 18:57, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The last sentence in the summary "She is a big inspiration." This isn't impersonal, deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.253.226.232 (talk) 22:19, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One and three months

[edit]

It was stated in article she was in hospital for 3 months so how could she have been able to surf one month after the attack?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Franklove143 (talkcontribs)

Two of the references provided show that she resumes surfing (experimentally) after one month, which was stated during an interview, and another saying she was surfing while still bandaged. Being hospitalized does not mean bedridden, as often part of therapy is doing activity. This may have been some simple on–water board standing and balance training (a possible activity).--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 00:04, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Did bethany ever boogie board?

Views on Female Sport

[edit]

Hamilton has spoken up for the preservation of female sport, and is apparently encountering opposition around this as per https://www.newsweek.com/bethany-hamilton-transgender-remarks-sparks-boycott-womens-event-1861557. Married name?

[edit]

I noticed that she has what most would consider a traditional marriage, I wonder if she has taken her husband's last name as her's, at least legally. I know she continues to use her birth name professionally, but I wonder if she took his name. rogerd (talk) 21:27, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
