"everyone gets paid about 4000 rupees"

A month? A year? A day? Maastrictian 19:48, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I asked the exact same question on User_talk:MacGyverMagic#Dhabawallah. MGM said he'd have another look at his source. - RedWordSmith 20:05, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • The title of this article is wrong. In Hindi Dabba means box, so dabbawalla (the dabba guy - or guy who transports the dabbas) would be the correct title. Dhaba on the other hand means a highway restaurant which caters to the highway traffic. I would suggest amending the title. Also, the salary would be approx. 4000 per month. 4000/week or day would be a pretty good sum for an educated engineer, so I am guessing the Dabbawalla dont make that kind of money for transporting dabbas.User:Mjaganna
  • Immediately after I added the previous comment, I did a Google search for Dabbawala, and guess what comes up first -- a Wikipedia article titled Dabbawala.Reading through that article, I think it is more accurate. I would suggest merging any additional information in this article into that one, and deleting this article.User:Mjaganna

Why not just change the entire contents of this page to be a redirect to Dabbawala rather than deleting it entirely? -Noren 23:12, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I would have agreed with that if 'Dhabawallah' was a synonym for 'Dabbawala' but they mean two entirely different things - in fact Dhabawallah is not even a word in common parlance. However it could be translated to mean somebody who owns/operates a Dhaba which is a highway restaurant (more common in the Northern states, but increasingly popular in the south too). For non-indian readers - 'Da' and 'Dha' are two different consonants in most Indian languages and are generally not interchangeable. For these reasons, I would still vote for deletion.User:Mjaganna
