Possibly "unrepresentative" listing of "Cork People"

[edit]

While it is laudable that particular groups interested in Cork culture and music are such avid Wikipedians, the current structure of the "List of Cork people" does not allow the casual visitor to immediately discern (for example) that while Michael Collins, Roy Keane and Rory Gallaher are world renowned names, some of the others included in the list – while no less valid entries – should possibly be listed slightly differently.

As a result, and to help in this area, I will presently look to subdivide the "List of Cork people" to a degree.

There is another large sector Corkonians should both pages be amalgamated? Durrus 21 June 2006

You mean Category:Corkonians (city)? This is a category. Articles are automatically added when user puts this category in an article. Not really possible to merge cat with page. (Although if you think it's worthwhile, may be worth validating that each member of the cat is accounted for in this list.) Or, am I misunderstanding? Is there another Cork people list out there? Also, while present and past members of specific musical and artistic troupes might be influential to some, most people are likely not aware of any huge contribution by these artists to Cork's musical culture or the world at large. As such it may not be entirely appropriate to have such a disproportionate representation of certain group members in this list. While the reorganisation of the list into subcategories may help with this imbalance, it may be appropriate to edit this article more vigorously in the future.

Finally, it should be noted that if a person who is from Cork, or contributing to Cork history or culture, and is remarkable enough to list here, then they should also be worthy of a stub article at the very least.

Categorisation is complete.

In the course of this edit, no listings have been removed.

Frankly however, per above note, a large majority of these listings should be culled as irrelevant and/or inappropriate to the purpose of this entry. To repeat, if worthy of a listing, any entry should also be worthy of an article explaining contributions.

To do

[edit]

May make sense to add VERY short description for each entry. EG:

* Roy Keane - Fooballer, Ireland and Manchester United
* Sonia O'Sullivan - Runner and World Champion Athlete

Religious figures?

[edit]

At least one anon user seems to be concerned about the inclusion of certain figures in this list. Given that the anon chose to characterise the removal with a misleading edit summary ("fixing a typo"), it's not clear what the perceived issue is. Without an accurate explanation of the intent, I am of course guessing, but perhaps the anon believes they are not notable for inclusion on the basis of a notability guideline(?) This would be an interesting discussion to have - given that the removed links all appear to map to articles which follow WP:BIO. It seems however that the removal was probably on the basis of the religious associations of the selected subjects. It would be interesting to have a discussion on this, but removing the listings of people involved variously in politics, the anti-conscription movement during WWI, or indeed the man after whom Croke Park is named would need to be properly reviewed. (These list members are not included solely for their religious connections. But, as per the relevant notability guidelines, for their broader notability - otherwise the articles themselves would fail 1BLP. So, it would be interesting to understand the argument for having the articles - but for some reason deciding to not list here.) Guliolopez (talk) 14:44, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

George Boole

[edit]

Perhaps the most famous UCC scientist is missing in this list. Boolean algebra is named after him, as is the crater Boole on the Moon. The library, underground lecture theatre complex and the Boole Centre for Research in Informatics[36] at University College Cork are named in his honour.

But he wasn't from Cork. Don't know if he identified as a Corkonian? The article only mentions he was a professor there and was buried in Cork. ~ Ablaze (talk) 07:03, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

Should this article be called "list of people from Cork"? This is better grammer. TMN81 (talk) 18:36, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notwithstanding the grammar issue, List of people from Cork would seem to be more in keeping with the convention for these types of lists. As per List of people from Dublin, List of people from Belfast, List of people from Amsterdam, List of people from New York City, etc. I for one would support a move.
