Hi Paul

OK - I do appreciate your comments and they way they were made. My prime motive for visiting the page was to remove the Knowhere guide link as this can probably be called spam by most. However while there I looked at the other links in view of WP:EL. Bus route stuff (& similar transport issues) to me really are directory things that I understand are not encyclopedic. Rightly or wrongly (& I really am happy to have a dialogue about this) I have tended to consider academic entries ok and corporate ones definitely not. The others - ok I'll be awkward - what do you think is reasonable (in view of WP:EL)? The language class does look questionable - I was working through a batch at the time - but I will take no action at all until I hear from you & I certainly will not fall out with anyone I'm having a discussion with! Look forward to hearing from you and all the best -- Nigel (Talk) 12:15, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paul
Thanks for the feedback. We can happily agree the language one goes I think. I'll look through the pages that you have mentioned (so I will/have removed links on but get back to me if you don't feel it's appropriate). All in all I would rather read them properly than comment too much now. However another editor raised concerns about external links being removed and there is a thread here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam#External links on town pages that you may wish to look at as well - it certainly filled in some gaps in my understanding.
I'll get back to you when I've looked properly. Regards -- Nigel (Talk)
It really is a thorny one - some days I look at it and think - all links can go! However there is a role for worthwhile relevant links in Wiki - the problem is getting agreement on what they are. For me I'm happy with Camberwell as it stand now but if you see it differently feel free to let me know (or if you find you want an opinion on something similar in the course of your travels). I appreciate the dialogue with you - regards --Nigel (Talk) 12:14, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Paul the day got away from me. Based on your local knowledge of the relevance of that link I have no problem with it at all - I certainly will not remove it - all the best --Nigel (Talk) 18:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dissociation

[edit]

Hello Paul, thanks for complimenting me on the description of single dissociation - I'll pass it on to E. Bruce Goldstein ;) Btw, yours wasn't too bad either. Let's give the article a little time so that others can join in and improve it with us. Dissociations

[edit]

Paul,

I recently noticed there is no Wikipedia entry for "Double Dissociation", but I did find the Dissociation (neuropsychology) page. I noticed in its history that you had tagged the article as a stub. I've just posted a comment on the Talk page there about a brief sketch of how I propose to expand it. However, I'm also concerned whether the article would be appropriately titled after I do so. Double dissociation is an important topic in neuropsychology, but it is really more of an experimental design topic that applies generally to the experimental sciences.

I think I can do a decent job adding content to the page, and I don't think the page is terribly useful in its current stub form, but I would like advice both after I've made my edits and more importantly about the categorization issue (is this a neuropsychology topic or a more general topic). I plan to watch the page (and its Talk page) for a week or so and then make edits. If you have a chance to "watch my back" I'd appreciate it.

Incidentally, I am a physiological psychologist.

conversion disorder

[edit]

Hi Paul- I will try and get round to doing the citations for this. Alongside my clotting problems I have just been provisionally diagnosed with POTS :-( but since tests have shown other autonomic dysfunction the initial "what @rseholes the 2 neurologists I intially saw are" is starting to wear off- quite worried. I have also ended up collating research on clotting disorders for the Nightingale Foundation. Ironically in other people's work my skill seems to be cross referencing citations and just generally finding relevant papers. for example 66% of clotting disorders have an undetermined hereditary cause- the NHS only tests for the remaining 34% if that. I also have a website: www.conversiondisorder.co.uk to work on. So I will really try and do the citations.

Best wishes- Simon

Hello Paul. I wasn't sure how to contact you so I'm trying this and I apologize if I missed an easier way. The reason I'm writing you is that I have some questions concerning Parkinson's Disease that are not addressed in the wikipedia article. Currently (and for the last year), I spend 50+ hours a week providing home care to a gentleman who has early onset Parkinson's as well as a brain injury acquired at birth. At 31 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and now he's 45 and the disease has progressed pretty much as expected, however I am having trouble understanding what symptoms that he presents stem from the Parkinson's or from his brain injury or from the medication he takes. I have numerous questions that probably wouldn't take up much of your time and I'd appreciate corresponding with you. If you have the time, please let me know at shane_gomez@hotmail.com P.S: what I am doing here is purely for my own interest and is without consent (or knowledge) of the family of the gentleman that I care for, as per the confidentiality interests of my client and company. In other words, I'm not coming to you to burden you with any questions about 'cures' or anything like that. I merely wish to share what I have observed about the disease and discuss a few of the unorthodox treatments that my client insists upon that I have questions and concerns about.

thank you paul

[edit]

Thank you Paul. As you know Simon and I don't think emotions can be "converted" into physical symptoms such as paralysis. Simon knows more about this than me. In my experience (of the Maudsley at least) most psychiatrists don't listen to patients and are very rude and arrogant. So it is not surprising that lots of people get misdiagnosed. Then it take a Byron Hyde and some senior politicians to sort the situation out as they did for Simon. Many consultants need a kick up the arse by their bosses to get them to even think. Byron says many doctors are liars as they don't want to be sued. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Catherinefionarichardson (talkcontribs) 17:30, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of The Painted Man

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Painted Man, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. DARTH PANDAduel 19:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've been editing The Painted Man to attempt it to save it from deletion. Please see WP:NB for help establishing notability, and I will happily remove the prod. Thanks! DARTH PANDAduel 19:10, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Response to removal of claims from PNES article

[edit]

Hello Paul. I noticed that you questioned my removal of claims from the Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures article.

Unfortunately, the edit summary I gave for my initial edit was confusing. Although I provided a lengthier explanation on the talk page of that article, I did not say "see talk" in the edit summary so I can see how you would not have noticed my discussion on the talk page.

I just added another section to discussion, in which I state my reasons for removing those claims from the article.

I also re-deleted the claims and provided a better edit summary this time.

Sorry about that. Twerges (talk) 19:33, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paul. I don't know much about PNES. It was something I helped another editor (Ikkyu2, who has left WP) with when I first got involved at WP. I've tweaked it a little and keep it watchlisted. Have you noticed the Non-epileptic seizure article is a parent to this one. The 20% figure refers to that classification-group. I found (and also note from the Mellers article) that there are as many favourite terms for these groups/conditions as there are people writing about them. I wish they would all make their minds up! So be careful that your sources are specific to PNES and feel free to improve NES too. I suspect that non-psychogenic non-epileptic seizures are more common in children or those with developmental delay, than in the adult-female focus for PNES. I agree with you that NES is an important issue.

BTW: how much do you know about epileptic seizures wrt neurons and stuff? Enough to check something over and review? I'm not ready yet, but maybe later? Colin°Talk 21:19, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll reply over on my talk page. Colin°Talk 21:42, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your Censorship of Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Paul, I understand you are enthusiastic supporter of Wikipedia, but I don't understand why you removed a link to another wiki service called Sci-Mate, which is tailored to the needs of academics? All these services are free, intended to have a positive effect on society, and ours even uses Wiki-media open source software, so I can't understand your decision to censor us. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.178.94.129 (talk) 07:57, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm not sure if you're checking this account, which is associated with promoting a website called SciMate. The reason for my edits to the Web 2.0 article and Science 2.0 article are that the text appeared to be marketing / promoting your site. Even though it's a non-profit or voluntary organization, that doesn't mean it can be promoted on Wikipedia. It's an interesting project and I wish you well. Thanks, --PaulWicks (talk) 12:17, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hiya matey

[edit]

Hiya Paul- conversion disorder is to be dropped from the next ICD. I have discussed this with one of the people instrumental in getting it dropped.

Oh- by the way I looked on amazon.com, then on amazon.co.uk to see what your publishing history was on this subject and other than "Rupert & Gina go fishing" I couldn't find any books by Paul Wicks. You didn't write "Rupert & Gina go fishing" did you? Oh also check out "missed diagnoses" by Dr. Byron Hyde. I'm the editor. It sold over 200 copies last month alone!

If you want to reintroduce it into the article, use proper referencing. "Stone et al" can refer to a number of publications. I will then check the primary source and if it is verified I will reintroduce the claim. I'm happy for Conversion Disorder to be ejected from ICD-10, as usual you are interpreting my dissatisfaction with the quality of your edits to be my role in the sinister cabal of Freud apologists. Your "appeal to authority" argument is weakened by the fact there isn't even a book called "Rupert and Gina go fishing" on Amazon. If you could at least provide accurate citations to your jokes I might find the rest of your content more convincing. Cheers, --PaulWicks (talk) 21:58, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I just enjoy editing it to wind you up as you always respond which is so bloody funny. I put this on my profile on patients like me. You can tell you went to Durham. Even more funny you actually looked up "Rupert and Gina" I made that up by the way. JS told me he helped get conversion disorder ejected- I can't quote what he told me personally. He is a great bloke. You need to chill out Paul.

Still can't believe you looked up "Rupert and Gina" I am now laughing so much I am about to pass out...oh also my neuro strongly suspects I have HSP which is a type of MND. I also have to quote "systemic autonomic failure". The hypoxia from POTS disturbed the brain's "idea of a limb". Anyway because of HSP I joined patients like me.

Movement to put test images on wikipedia

[edit]

Paul, I am one of those you mentioned on your page that rarely contribute, in part because of a lack of time. However, I will be unlikely to contribute in the future after having seen how most on wikipedia respond when we try to talk of test security. I am on you talk page because I saw a previous comment you made on the WCST page expressing concern for test security. For this reason, you should know that there seems to be an agenda on the part of a few to put as many psych/neuropscyh tests on wikipedia (for evidence of this, look at the contributions from DocJames/Jmh649 and LjL - both have rather explicitly indicated their desire for revealing more tests (despite DocJames initial argument in the Rorschach debate that in the case of the Rorschach, there was such a public desire to see the images and this was stronger than any opposition to it). Now they are not only putting WCST stimuli on Wikipedia, but the methodology - which ruins the test for those who've seen it. Same for the Rey-O. I give both the WCST and the Rey-O regularly, and am concerned! By the way, Docjames and LjL are not psychologists (DocJames is an ER doc). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Takamine45 (talkcontribs) 05:00, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not being familiar with the subject of conversion disorder, it could take me some time to sift through everything and figure out if there is a pattern. Since the block on the original IP has expired, the current account is not engaging in block evasion. Likewise none of the previous users were banned, so it is not ban evasion either. As such, I cannot in good faith block the user. I would suggest engaging the user to build a consensus version of the article, and if that does not work, use the standard warning track. — Kralizec! Unfortunately on the internet, anyone can pretend to be anything they want. Wikipedia's only defense against that is our three core content policies: WP:NOR, WP:VER, and WP:NPOV. Rather than allow the editor to express his or her own -and potentially off the wall- opinions (a violation of WP:NOR and WP:NPOV), they must support any material that has been challenged (or likely to be challenged) with citations to reliable, third-party, published sources (as per WP:VER). — Kralizec! File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Warded man cover.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Inflammation

[edit]

I can't believe that you removed my postings on inflammation?? It's all valid material that points to a simple fact that inflammation is involved with a large number of medical conditions. The postings are based on scientific facts. My only agenda is to help people to understand that there is a connection. What I've listed is only a small fraction of the available scientific evidence. There are thousands of studies that link inflammation with various medical conditions. The one with the agenda is you. This is a total misuse of your position as an editor. My website is non commercial and promotes natural methods of lessening one's inflammation. I'm not selling anything. You, on the other hand, help run an online medical social network that is directly linked to drug companies. Your whole website is about finding the right pharmaceutical for a given situation. So far I've done the 2 degrees (Bachelor and Honours) needed to apply for the doctorate, but I've taken this year off to give myself a break from the poor student life and actually earn some money.

I've recently made some additions to clinical neuropsychology regarding the education requirements in the UK. If you have time would you be able to have a look and see whether the information I added is correct? It would be much appreciated. I had no problem adding the Australian educational requirements, but its actually surprisingly hard to figure out the educational requirements for other countries.

The page is in need of alot of TLC. I'm in the process of deciding how to go about getting some references into the article, I think the best strategy is a large-scale rewrite based on references.

I'd be great to get some feedback if you have the time.

Thanks

Response to Top 10 Inflammatory Foods to Avoid

[edit]

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for showing me the rope. As you already know, I'm new to editing content pages here although I've been a regular user of Wikipedia for the last couple of years. So please bear with me. Regarding the last edit that was reverted, my objective was to elaborate on the topic about anti-inflammatory diet by pointing to a list of other possible inflammatory foods without overwhelming the page. But, I guess that's against the policy because the site belongs to me, even though I think the link contains information that may be of some use to Wikipedia's users. So sorry about that! Appreciate that you kept the other edits, especially the cardiovascular risk associated with NSAID use. Similar warnings are printed on labels of prescription and OTC NSAIDs (except aspirin), so I think that shouldn't be left out. Thanks again! Itnoby (talk) 14:52, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

superoxide dismutase page

[edit]

Wow, you are quick on the trigger. Your message showed only 30 seconds or so after my edit. Yes, I know the rules, etc.. A check will show that I have been here for a long time, if recently only as an occasional IP number. Right now, I am flying thru mostly textual/syntax edits. The few times I even mention something material, it is with the intent of coming back and providing further references ASAP.

Gentle chide-- On the principle of "He who complains about the food gets to cook"<grin> : you can easily extract the cites from the www.mitospharma.com website yourself. Or do "tempol" and "radiation" on www.pubmed.gov . Always appreciate assistance and saves me the trouble of coming back and doing it myself. Thanks on the front-end. Parkinson's science learning project in Wikiversity

[edit]

Hi. I'd like to bring your attention to a new learning project in Wikiversity. As you have been involved with the discussion on the wikipedia Parkinson's disease page I felt you might be interested in looking at the project and perhaps even contributing material to it. Please see my Talk page, http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/User_talk:Droflet#The_Science_Behind_Parkinson.27s_learning_project , the subpage, http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/User_talk:Droflet/ProjectDescription or the project itself , http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Portal:The_Science_Behind_Parkinson%27s . It would be great if you could bring the project to the attention of others who might be interested in helping us develop it. Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited PatientsLikeMe, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Depression (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Notification of automated file description generation

[edit]

Your upload of File:Adshel.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited ALS, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page EMG. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Interest in ALS

[edit]

Some years ago I wrote to the ALS Association to ask them to engage in Wikipedia. They were unable. I also visited the office of PatientsLikeMe and ask them the same. The time did not seem right to them.

From my perspective, it seems that Wikipedia has been the most requested, published, accessed, and consulted source of information for the past generation. I appreciate you rallying editors to develop it and I wish you luck. Because you mentioned collaborating with organizations, I though I would also say that the same amount of labor that would have gotten good ALS info out through Wikipedia 10 years ago would still insure that it goes out in the next 10 years. Compared with any other communication strategy, Wikipedia is lower cost and higher impact. Do you know any willing ears at organizations which might contribute expertise toward development? Bluerasberry (talk) 15:27, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, yes I've raised this with some of the non-profits too and suggested they follow the Parkinson's Society which did a wiki-training for a dozen or so of their staff to help work on the page. That hasn't progressed, so I made it a personal goal for 2023 to try and get it up to GA status - I just don't know how close we are yet! PaulWicks (talk) 12:55, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article ALS you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:ALS and Talk:ALS/GA2 for issues which need to be addressed.
