Animal sacrifice

Per the Bacchanalia summary section in this article (and the Bacchanalia article itself), the very unusual forms, origins and meanings -- these seem to be several -- of animal sacrifice in the cults and myths of Dionysus/Bacchus needs a much more thorough treatment. An editor has just added something on the matter, citing Russell's History of Western Philosophy. That's just a start (addit: having just read the cited source; Russell's account is over-generalised, hovering between Greek and Roman practice; and of course, he was a philosopher, not a historian. Scholarship has moved on since '45. I've removed the addition and interpretation from that section. A more up-to-date, specialist treatment is needed. Erroneous links

At least two links in the article redirect to articles on geographical locations instead of ancient deities.

So far, I have identified Eleutheros (subsection "Liber and importation to Rome", redirects to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nahr_al-Kabir), Nysus (subsection "Second birth", redirects to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ni%C5%A1#Middle_Ages). There may be more.

Delinked both, since neither appears to have an article, and both are redirects for other topics that have articles. If someone writes articles about these mythological figures, they could be placed at those titles. P Aculeius (talk) 19:55, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Linear B spelling

According to this article, "di-wo-nu-so" is spelled 𐀇𐁂𐁕𐀒 in Linear B; but List of Mycenaean deities uses 𐀇𐀺𐀝𐀰 for di-wo-nu-so. Moreover, according to Linear B article, 𐁂 stands for "au", 𐁕 is not yet deciphered, and 𐀒 for "ko", so that 𐀇𐁂𐁕𐀒 is equal to "di-au-?-ko", and not "di-wo-nu-so". As far as I can tell, neither citation for 𐀇𐁂𐁕𐀒 (Beekes 2009 and Thomas Palaima) uses 𐀇𐁂𐁕𐀒, only the transliterated form "di-wo-nu-so". Deiadameian (talk) 13:00, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Restructure the Epithet Section

I noticed the Offspring section uses a very well organized table that puts the information together in a rather uncluttered way, I think the Epithet Names could use that treatment as well to keep this page a bit more tidy. 2606:A000:9FC0:57:BD49:32CB:8A1F:53AD (talk) 01:02, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are drawbacks to using tables, as I found when working on the tables of offspring in this and other Olympian articles. Without practice or in the wrong editing environment, they're hard to edit, be it to add or remove an item, or to add a citation or tag an entry as needing one, let alone restructure. Wikipedia's table tools are quite limited, in part because of HTML's restrictions. Appropriate column widths may be hard to find. They may not present well on small screens such as phones. Readers may also feel that the information in a table is more definitive than that in a list, for example that it does include all possible members and that the descriptions are complete. Converting to a table is a substantial task, and reverting to list format would be even more so. I can't recommend it. NebY (talk) 13:18, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
