Any facts about the local economy and growth rates?

Why isn't there any mention of the Maskara Festival, which Bacolod is most famous for?

The Lists

[edit]

If the list is not complete, it shouldn't be there.

The Article It really needs a lot of work. The first section has information that could be classified as 'notable' aspects of the city.

[edit]

I am removing these links after this discussion at Wikipedia:Help desk#External links. WP:EL also states that links should be to "a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included." Also, "sites with objectionable amounts of advertising" should be avoided, and with the sun star bacolod link, roughly 50% of the page is advertising. Also, "Sites that are only indirectly related to the article's subject" should be avoided, and the case is the same with these links. SpencerT♦C 20:58, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; I have been reverting the anon IP's edits concerning those EL's, even had the article semi-protected a few weeks ago, but the anon spammer is at it again. — • Kurt Guirnela •Feedback 09:36, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. I wanted to make sure my edits were justified so I wouldn't break 3RR. SpencerT♦C 17:26, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About Language Centers

[edit]

I'm changing the term Language Center for Koreans to Language Center for Foreigners. While it is true that there is a large number of Korean expatriates in Bacolod City, we have to note that these language centers cater to other nationalities as well, although the number of foreign students are not as big as Koreans. If any editor wishes to revert, please discuss it here first. Thanks. Xeltran (talk) 13:18, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dakbánwa or Ciudad?

[edit]

How can Dakbánwa sang Bacólod be the native name of the City of Bacolod when the word dakbánwa (English: very large town) which comes from the amalgamized phrase "dakô (English: big) ng̃a bánwa (English: large town)", could not even be found in the old Ilonggo/Ilongo/Ylongo dictionaries? Here's an external link to an Online Dictionary of Old Ilonggo/Ilongo/Ylongo Language. What you can find in that online dictionary is the entry "siudád, (Sp. ciudad) City, large town. (cf. bánwa).". I do believe that dakbánwa was just recently coined and being popularized on local radios and televisions. It only shows that it is not even a native word. The word dakbánwa does not literally mean city since it's English equivalent means very large town. A town can be very large but it's still a town. Furthermore, there were no cities in Negros during the Spanish Colonial Period. Most of the old Bacolodians'/Bacoleños/mg̃a Bacolodnon nearest exposure to the word "city" was through the City of Iloilo (Spanish: Ciudad de Iloílo/Yloílo/Yloylo), the Most Loyal and Noble City of Iloilo (Spanish: La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad de Iloílo), which became a city in 1885. Thus, Bacolodians'/Bacoleños/mg̃a Bacolodnon first grasp of a word called "city" is the Spanish loanword ciudad (English: city). Eversince 1855, the word ciudad has been indigenized by the native Bacolodians/Bacoleños/mg̃a Bacolodnon and the Ilonggos/Ilongos/Ylongos alike. Since ciudad is a loanword, that should be used by Bacolodians/Bacoleños/mg̃a Bacolodnon as a native word for a city. There is no doubt on the wikipedia entry of the City of Iloilo saying Iloilo City (Filipino: Lungsod ng Iloilo, Hiligaynon: Ciudad sang Iloílo) and Native Name: Ciudad sang Iloílo. It only shows that the correct Hiligaynon term for a city is ciudad. Besides, almost everyone in Bacolod (if not all), uses the word ciudad instead of the ridiculous-sounding dakbánwa word which has no historical basis to be even precisely/correctly called as a "native" word. Who coined it anyway? Does Hiligaynon language really have an active Commission on the Hiligaynon Language to regulate its words and spellings (orthography)? Filipino orthography today allows the Filipinos to use the Modern Filipino alphabet which consists of the entire 26-letter set of the Basic Modern Latin alphabet, the Spanish Ñ and the Ng digraph of Tagalog. Does that mean that we, Hiligaynons, could preserve the Spanish loanwords' spelling in its original form because of the new Filipino alphabet? Why not? We, Hiligaynons, don't even bother change the spelling of Engish loanwords used in Hiligaynon. The usage of the letters K and W is specifically for the Tagalog language. What can you say???? Bacoleño (talk) 15:41, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will attempt to consult Hiligaynon experts at the University of San Agustin's Institute for Panayana and Cross-Cultural Studies, a branch of the University Coordinating Center for Research and Publications. This is a matter not to be trifled with, and requires the input of Hiligaynon linguists. Meanwhile, I did find a reference to dakbanwa in an online Hiligaynon dictionary: http://www.bohol.ph/diksyunaryo.php?sw=siudad,%20dakbanwa&lang=Hiligaynon. The word, however, indeed does not appear in Kaufmann's 1934 Visayan-English dictionary. — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 01:34, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

<Cityname> <City>

[edit]

There is a discussion regarding the removal of the word "city" from the article titles of Philippine cities. This may imminently affect the article name for Bacolod. For city names which are not unique, disambiguation alternatives are also being presented. Formal request for page move may follow after a reasonable time of discussion. If you wish to participate, please post your comments here. --JinJian (talk) 04:48, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bacolod CityBacolod — Part of series of multiple page move requests involving Philippine cities under the category Capital cities/municipalities with the same name with that of another local non-capital city/municipality. The capital city or municipality need not have the provincial name attached to it since it is the preferred primary topic; while the non-capital municipality/city should include the provincial name.. This request is made after preliminary discussions for the removal of the word "city" from most of the article titles of Philippine cities and providing disambiguation wherever necessary. Some disambiguation may involve using the <cityname>, <provincename> format, regardless if it is highly urbanized, independent or component cities. In here, <provincename> purports to describe the general area and not necessary as the mother political unit of the city, since some people might have wrongly believed that this naming convention is exclusively for Philippine towns only. For more information please see Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines/Task_force_LGU#Article_names_for_Philippine_cities:_.3Ccityname.3E_.3Ccity.3E. JinJian (talk) 07:23, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
