ABP location

[edit]

Thanks for addressing my question, but one remains: why ABP? Why not Toscaninnis, the Garage, or a multitude of other places? (Well, two remain): what time will it be over? If I'm there late, will anyone castrate me? -[[User:Mysekurity|Mysekurity]] [[additions | e-mail]] 03:28, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

meet-up

[edit]

hey, i'm a relatively new boston wikipedian (going to college at northeastern, been living here my whole life), i looked at the agenda a bit, but im still not sure really sure what you guys do at such gatherings; mostly just talk and eat? anyway, i might be interested in meeting up. if not the 10th then another date perhaps!--Gozar 23:30, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, just talking and eating for the most part, getting to know (face-to-face) some of the local Wikipedians. Occasionally there is some additional event planning (e.g. as when Wikimania was being held in town). —Steven G. Johnson (talk) 19:48, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

next meetup date?

[edit]

When is the next scheduled meetup? I am definitely interested in attending and also learning more about the upcoming conference...but looking for some advance notice so I can plan :) Jpittman 21:37, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Check the main meetup page for updates; usually we meet twice a month, around once every two weeks. This week we may also meet Wednesday for wiki wed... +sj + 18:03, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not currently active?

[edit]

Have the meetups died out, or have they merely gone undocumented? Andjam 02:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NB: we should really document things here, and stop using Meetup save as a calendar/email system +sj + 20:44, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, there continue to be regular meetups in Cambridge, they just are no longer documented here. The place to look is the Boston Wikipedia Meetup Group on meetup.com. (In fact, the next meetup is tomorrow, 12 Feb. 2007, at the Central Sq. Toscannini's on Main St. in Cambridge.) —Steven G. Johnson 04:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are there really still meeting regularly? From all appearances, the meetup.com page has not been updated in a very, very long time, and the scheduling of new events is just automatic.--Pharos (talk) 06:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Too busy watching football :) --Tom 14:52, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not any more :-) +sj + 20:44, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly, it's really hard to tell if there have been any actual meetups in the last half-year or not. Can someone fill me in? By the way, the meetup.com page is about to disappear in 12 days.--Pharos (talk) 03:08, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We've been meeting alternately in Harvard Square and at the Tosci's (on the month). There was some billing snag; I'm hoping to get WP meetups to be free for everyone, but that won't happen soonest. At any rate, we're set to have another gathering on Monday at Harvard Law School. +sj +
I think the last one I made was late summer, so I'm not sure what is going on. The best person to ask would probably be User:sj, who has been one of the prime Wikipedia organizers in the area. —Steven G. Johnson (talk) 03:46, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the interest!

Geonotice

[edit]

I'm thinking about requesting a geonotice for our meetup on June 14th. The notice would be posted from May 15 through June 15, and would be viewable on the Watchlist of editors in Massachusetts. What are others' thoughts? Emw (talk) 16:04, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, as I said at one of the meetups. Keeping it up on June 15 for a meetup on June 14 seems pointless, though. Ucucha 16:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I'll ask that the notice be removed at 1:00 UTC on June 15, i.e. 9:00 PM June 14 local time. Emw (talk) 22:15, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What's the deal?

[edit]

Now wait a sec. It says here that there is a June 14 meetup at Red Bones in Somerville. And it says HERE here that there is a June 15 meetup at the Grafton Street Pub in Cambridge.

So what's the deal? Are these rival groups? Is this like the Jets and the Sharks? Can I attend both, or do I risk being kneecapped by one group if I attend the other's meetup, or what? And if I attend neither, then will both groups be out to get me? Herostratus (talk) 18:23, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The information on the meetup.com page has not yet been updated. The information on Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston is correct. Cheers, Emw (talk) 18:37, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How'd the June 15 meetup go?

[edit]

How did everything go? Did the geonotice help to bring in some new people, I hope?--Pharos (talk) 20:19, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The geonotice seemed to significantly increase turnout. About 15 people came. Of the four previous Boston meetups I've been to since Fall 2009, I recall the number of attendees as something like 4, 5, 3, and 8.
While the restaurant was nice, the seating was unideal. The group sat at a string of pushed-together square tables in a corner of the restaurant. The long table ran lengthwise against a wall, with a cushioned bench on the wall side and chairs on the other side. This caused people sitting on the wall-side bench to be immobilized once they sat down, unless they felt like asking a handful of people to get up, shimmy down the table, and let them out (and similarly inconvenience them when getting back to their seat). It would have been better if we sat at a long table where one half weren't pushed against a wall. Better still, maybe, would have been to sit in a cluster of circular tables.
Also, I imagine it would have minimized confusion to have some way of knowing how to recognize people who were coming to the meetup. By and large, Wikipedians don't what know each look like. From my experience this is usually solved by waiting outside the meeting place (typically a restaurant) and asking likely candidates also waiting outside if they're there for the meetup. There should be a better way.
Another issue in meetup groups of this size is remembering people's names, or their usernames. I suppose people's conversation stands on its own merit, but in face-to-face meetups of such size I think it'd be nice to have the option of, say, using name tags to keep track of people.
Those minor issues aside, I think things went well. I met editors whose work I'd previously admired and got to talk with them in some detail about it. Emw (talk) 00:07, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

September

[edit]

If it's been scheduled, what is the date and time of the meetup in September? I'll be in Boston for a couple of days next month, so if the timing is right I may be able to attend. Thanks. Newyorkbrad (talk) 00:40, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The meetup is always held on the second Monday of the month. I believe the September meetup will follow that, so it will be September 13 at 1900 EST. 173.48.43.197 (talk) 01:40, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct, as noted here: http://www.meetup.com/wikipedia-5/. Emw (talk) 11:51, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, (I'm a new-ish contributor, mostly in liturgical arts, American colonial and French medieval areas, with broad backgrounding in music, theater, dance and art history. I do tours in the area, teach, and write on the early burying grounds and church history sites. Is there a Welcome Wagon packet for me? :--})

Anyway: Please note, the restaurant known as "Lee's" in Harvard Square (on Church St. near the corner with Brattle) has been sold and is now called "The Harvard Square Cafe." Penny's staff is still there in part, and no changes in the booths, etc., have been made, but if anyone is trying to find it, the name has shifted (although the "Lee's" Part is still under the awning, they just don't light that part any more.

I have some "real life" writing deadlines, but would like to try to come if I can. No certainty, but I wanted to register my interest, at least. Best--Dellaroux (talk) 00:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ooops, I see the issue: The "Le" that I took to be a typo is a different name entirely. OK, I know the old PPasteur, will you have a yellow umberella (or some other, less partisan color?) by which to be recognized?

I learned the word "Disambiguation" here; looks like that's what is called for!

Best--Dellaroux (talk) 00:51, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Takes Boston

[edit]

We've talked about it a few times in past meetups, but I'd like to get people's thoughts on how we could go about organizing a 'Wikipedia Takes Boston' event. The gist of the event is to gather as many photographs of as many local sights as possible for articles where they are needed. Wikipedia Takes Manhattan has run three times; we could probably learn a lot from them and other previous Wikipedia Takes the City events.

I came across a tool named Wiki ShootMe! that could be helpful here. You give it a latitude, longitude and radius, and it returns a list of articles in that area that don't have images yet. A list for Boston is here: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/wikishootme/index.html?autorun=1&language=en&lat=42.357778&lng=-71.061667&distance=10.

Would some weekend day in April work for people? Emw (talk) 16:23, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like there is tool and documentation infrastructure abound for this sort of thing: http://toolserver.org/~contests/, http://toolserver.org/~contests/startahunt.php. Some photography groups we may want to get in contact with: Boston Camera Club, Boston West Photographic Society, Harvard Photography Club, Boston University Photography Club.
The above link to Wiki ShootMe lists only 39 articles that don't have any images yet, so it may be worthwhile to make a bigger list of photo targets before the contest. For example, many neighborhoods in cities immediately surrounding Boston don't have images yet: see Cambridge,_Massachusetts#Neighborhoods, Somerville,_Massachusetts#Squares_and_neighborhoods, Quincy,_Massachusetts#Neighborhoods and others.
Great idea! We could go a long way just covering buildings, statues, memorials, and other places in Boston proper / on the freedom trail. Wikipedia takes Freedom? SJ+ 13:39, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's definitely a lot that could be covered within Boston, and a name like Wikipedia takes Freedom sounds too good to pass up. If April sounds like a good month, then the available weekends are 4/2-3, 4/9-10, 4/16-17 and 4/23-24. Easter is 4/24, so it may be better in terms of turnout to go with an earlier weekend. SJ, you mentioned something about a library event on your talk page. Is there a date scheduled for that which we could work around? Emw (talk) 02:49, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trying other days of the week

[edit]

I think we'd be able to reach a greater variety of people if we sometimes held meetups on other days of the week. How would people feel about moving the next meetup or the one after it to Saturday or Sunday? —Emufarmers(T/C) 00:41, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Join 'Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States' (WALRUS)!

[edit]

Now that your region is joining the Great American Wiknic, we'd like to invite a representative from the group, who should ideally have some experience organizing local meetups, to join the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) committee to help advance real-life Wikimedian activities in the US.

We'd also love to invite all wiki-New-Englanders to join discussions at wikimediaus-l.--Pharos (talk) 05:00, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Join Wikipedia Loves Libraries with a local wiki-event in October!

[edit]

With the recent experience of the Great American Wiknic in June, we'd like to invite you to join the exciting sequel: Wikipedia Loves Libraries. Please add your ideas for a local librarycentric wiki-event to the national page :)--Pharos (talk) 02:06, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My goodness, this dovetails wonderfully with an idea that we've had at the MIT (in the Music Library and Music and Theater Arts section) to host a Wikipedia day for people to meet, use the many reliable sources in the MIT libraries, etc., to help improve Wikipedia and build a better bridge between the Wikipedia community and the community of one of the most tech-savvy schools in the country. Live music, probably food, etc., would coexist with a lot of research and writing. While of course music would be one focus, Wikipedians would be encouraged to write about any subject they'd like. Anyone else in on this? We hadn't narrowed down a date yet, but I can see if that week works for MIT if the community is in on it. We may also partner with IMSLP since there are also many PD scores still to get online or get metadata for. Best, -- Michael Scott Cuthbert (talk) 02:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
An MIT-hosted library event to improve Wikipedia sounds very worthwhile. I'd be in for something like that. Which dates are you considering?
Another event for Wikipedians at Harvard Law Library (which needn't be mutually exclusive with this MIT one) has been suggested for the early-to-mid September time frame. See http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-boston/2011-August/thread.html for the discussion. Maybe you'd consider pitching the MIT library event on the Boston Wikimedia mailing list? Our monthly meetups -- e.g., the one at 7:00 PM tomorrow in Harvard Square -- would also be a good place to get feedback. (The meetup option would probably reach less people, but give more in-depth feedback.) Emw (talk) 03:13, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
These both sound like really great potential wiki-library events, and I imagine we can be a bit flexible about "officially" affiliating them with Wikipedia Loves Libraries even if the dates don't quite match, though that would mean a lesser potential for drawing in people from the US-wide notice.--Pharos (talk) 11:21, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in a Wikidata intro?

[edit]

Hey :)

Denny from the Wikidata team will be in Boston in November for a conference (http://iswc2012.semanticweb.org). If there is interest by local Wikipedians we can try to arrange for a intro session or something. He could intro Wikidata and answer questions. Interested? Maybe someone local even able to help with a venue and local outreach?

Hi Lydia, I'd definitely be interested in this. We could potentially approach the Berkman Center for Internet and Society to see if they would be interested in hosting a talk or something. I'd be happy to help organize. GabrielF (talk) 07:30, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did not know about the mailing list, thanks!
I just want a room to chat, not more: I currently try to organize a room at MIT myself and I plan to give a 1h-lecture about Wikipedia for MIT-People and followed by a real-live-meetup, to see faces of Wiki-collegues and chat with them 1:1. (That's why I prefer a real-live-meeting.)
