San Fernando Valley

[edit]

Your recent edit, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=San_Fernando_Valley&diff=9962839&oldid=9821096, while your editing is quite correct in regards to the "SOB" statement, is incorrect for the rest. As you may know, the houses (which are the only zones south of Ventura Boulevard) in the Santa Monica Mountains are much more rich than those of the floor of the valley. Many celebrities, including Jamie Fox in Tarzana, live in these houses, therefore the statement you took out in that edit regarding the property values should remain, while the SOB statement should stay out, like you did, until the author clarifies what that means.

You may or may not know the above, therefore if you do know about the properties, please kindly excuse the explanation.

Thank you --Lan56 19:44, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)

    • Thank you for the corrections. I would have made them myself to save you the trouble, but I wanted to hear any objections you may have had first. Either way, I thank you for it. --Lan56 05:30, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)

Fast Times

[edit]

I may have been the one that removed it when I split the list, which had formerly contained both movies and t.v. shows, into a list for just movies and list for just television shows. It's quite possible that I didn't recognize it as a television show when I made the t.v.-only list. I doubt anyone will remove if you reinsert it.:) -- Decumanus 20:28, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

re: your recent John Kerry edit

[edit]

You recently changed the link at the top of the page from "Presidential campaign of John Kerry" to "2004 presidential campaign of John Kerry", stating that the latter was the title of the article. I'm actually pretty certain the title of the article, at the time, was "Presidential campaign of John Kerry," not "2004 ...", not only making the link's title redundant, but making the link incorrect (forced redirect) as well. Oh well. It's irrelevant now anyway; the article title has since been changed. -- Wikisux 09:10, Mar 12, 2004 (UTC)

I think you earn a lot respect. Regardinging BBC's use or non-use of the terrorism term, I feel you to have misunderstood what I wrote completely. Of course BBC use the term. Of course this article is to use the term too. The issue is not if, it's how much and in what tone.

<grin> Glad you've figured it out. It just goes to show how poor our documentation is right now - some people are here a long time before discovering some of the most useful features. Incidentally, the Wikipedia:Welcoming committee has been working on Wikipedia:Tutorial as a way to give all this kind of basic information concisely in one place, so that people don't have this kind of problem. Good question.. and it's to do with convenience, mostly; 24 hours is the default block time, and I just want to stop him/her ASAP. I'll list all the reincarnations on wikipedia:vandalism in progress after it's clear this troubled fellow has given up for the day, and all such usernames can be re-blocked for an indefinite period after such time, if necessary. I think it's safe to assume these are throwaway usernames, anyhow. -- Hadal 08:31, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I noticed your edit summaries regarding obvious copyvios; one needn't be an admin to list such a page on Wikipedia:Possible copyright infringements. All that is required is blanking the page and replacing it with the following:

:(source URL of copied material here)

It's also customary to sign it. Then, you'd just follow the link to the possible copyright infringements page and list it accordingly. Of course, if you already know this you can ignore me. ;) -- Hadal 10:39, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations! You are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Good luck. Why did you revert the Willie Brown page from one that had "succeeded" correctly spelled and gave his birthdate to an illiterate version that can't spell "succeeded" (or, as you seem to prefer, "suceeded") correctly and is impoverished as to one very important piece of information, lacking the man's birthdate? Now we've lost my contribution to Wikipedia, thanks to your reversion that borders on vandalism. Wiwaxia 11:24, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I saw your edits to that show's article. God, I miss it. Bea Arthur walking around, spouting faux-liberalisms, wearing just robes and tunics and shit. Good times. Mike H 02:38, Jul 10, 2004 (UTC)

IMO, Maude was Bea Arthur's better work. Everyone else loves The Golden Girls but I think Maude was better. I wish TV Land would run it again.
Sometimes I write articles on old sitcoms, like Petticoat Junction, or One Day at a Time, but I usually write soap opera articles. I contributed heavily to As the World Turns, Another World (soap opera), and Days of Our Lives, if you're interested.
Also really cool additions to any theme song collection: The Secret Storm final theme, from Mark Little's MyThemes. Also, the first color theme for As the World Turns, and the first hour-long Another World theme. Even if you're not interested in soap operas, it's a really great piece of television history. Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 18:27, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for re-capitilizing Elfrith's Alley, BUT before you changed it, it linked to an article, now it links to nothing. ...how did you decide which of the two contradictory pieces of information in Ellis Island should be removed? (I'm watching this page should you choose to reply here). Dpbsmith (talk) 23:20, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I did some research and, although I didn't find support for that exact figure, I realized it was entirely a contradiction if I took out the part about the huge number of immigrants not being allowed through (8 million out of 20 million, wasn't it?) First of all, no references give any indication that that many people weren't allowed into the U.S. (imagine the logistics of transporting that many people back to their countries of origin by ship), and secondly either way 20 million were processed, even if they all weren't let through. The research I found indicates that 2% is a much closer number to reality for those that were sent home. It occurs to me as I write this that the author of those lines might have meant that the 8 million weren't allowed immediately to enter the country and were held at Ellis Island itself for some length of time but, until he or she returns to edit, I thought my change was the best way to reolve the lack of clarity. Comments? Moncrief 23:25, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)
Fine with me. Just curious, that's all. My chief interest in the Ellis Island page was trying to make sense of New Jersey boosters' claims that Liberty Island is in New Jersey (it's not), and the details of the Ellis Island decision were relevant, which is why it's on my watchlist. You should probably put your above remarks on the Talk:Ellis Island page... Dpbsmith (talk) 21:31, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

GLBTs

[edit]

A few reasons why I'm doing what I've been doing:

  1. When the main category gets to be several pages long (ie. after 200 articles), it starts to become difficult to use and eventually fails to serve its original purpose.
  2. It makes Wikipedia look badly organized to file someone in a category and a subcategory of that category. It just makes us look like we didn't think through the organizing scheme very well.
  3. Making subcategories does not constitute "destroying a master list". There's still List of famous gay, lesbian or bisexual people, and the smaller categories still appear as subcategories at the top of the GLB people category. It's not taking anything away from anything.

Basically, I think it's more useful to have gay musicians filed with other gay musicians. If I specifically want to search for gay musicians, it's better than having to plow through an undifferentiated list of 500 or 600 names just to find 20 or 30 gay songwriters. Bearcat 11:46, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Maude

[edit]

Someone put up that Maude divorced a husband...and I'm inclined to disagree. I know that three of her husbands died, and every time her marriages were mentioned, it seemed to be the three husbands plus Walter, so who did she divorce? Not Carol's father, because he died. Welsh people

[edit]

While it is arguable if Welsh people can constitute a race, it is perfectly possible to be racist towards them, since racism and race aren't "scientifically" connected. That's my point on the other thread, that a lot of "British" humour is based on racist stereotypes of Welsh etc, and jokes like "If you ask for directions in Wales Baldrick you'll be rinsing the spit out of your hair" etc, that would not be permitted for most other groups. A lot of British humour seems to be based on xenophobic stereotypes of the "Celts" and Continentals.

Comma outside the quotes

[edit]

See WP:MOS#Quotation marks. "When punctuating quoted passages, include the mark of punctuation inside the quotation marks only if the sense of the mark of punctuation is part of the quotation." --SPUI (talk) 22:28, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Personally, I feel that the rule makes perfect sense. If quotes are being used for a short phrase, the punctuation has nothing to do with it, and should be outside. I've been told that programmers and people who think like them find this to make more sense. --SPUI (talk) 03:34, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

19xx in television

[edit]

Hi, Moncrief!

I just wanted to drop a quick thank-you note for your attention to the “19xx in television” series of articles. This is one series that is always in need of attention/correction/clarification.

It looks, however, that we have a misunderstanding over some of my minor edits to 1973 in television, namely, the dates of The Doris Day Show. Let me explain why the edit I did was the way I did it, and why I really prefer it to stay there.

In a perfect world, one would know all of the start/end dates of the shows listed in “19xx in television”. Since the world we live in is far from perfect, this information is not readily available. The format I was sticking with for the sections listing shows that started and ended on a particular year is as follows: list the shows in the chronological order, then alphabetically. So, for example, 1996 in television (Debuts section), lists Everybody Loves Raymond, that started on 9/13, then Spin City, that started sometime in September, and then the rest of the shows alphabetically. If a start date becomes known for any of the shows without one (which is pretty often as easy as quering imbd), it is added, and the list is re-sorted.

Pretty much the same system is applied to the "Ending this year", except that alphabetical order is not readily apparent as the shows are listed in the order of their start date first, and in alphabetical order second. It is also often not that easy to find the end date as it is to find the start date of the show. Please, note, that the "end date" is the date, on which the season finale, or the last new episode was aired. Episodes re-run after the show had ended do not count (if you see this rule broken for any of the shows, feel free to correct the error)—for example, even though you can still watch Friends on some channels, you will not find the show listed on 2005 in television.

Apparently, most of the "Ending this year" lists are simply sorted chronologically, because none of the end dates were available to me. However, whenever I find out what any particular date is (even though it is just the month), I add it to the show name, and this show automatically moved upward. So, instead of reverting my change, I would rather see people adding the actual end dates and re-sorting the list afterwards.

I hope this explanation clears the misunderstanding. Please by no means hesitate to ask me if you have any questions. I would also appreciate if you either revert your most recent change to 1973 in television, or added the end dates for the rest of the shows that ended that year (providing, of course, that you have or are willing to look for this information).

Anyway, I hope you will have as much fun editing Years in television as I had for the past six months. Drop me a note if you need anything.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus europeaus) 14:31, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I really didn't like the way I'd left it.  :) RickK 22:28, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

I recently made an addition for the Sandra Bernhard album "Without You I'm Nothing" which was also made into a film (the album links from Sandra Bernhard and the movie links from the album entry.) Anyhow the problem which is frustating me is there is apparently another something or other in existance with the name "Without You I'm Nothing" - now the proper title for the bernhard album *AND* movie is "Without You I'm Nothing" (NO COMMA.) This other project *ALSO* has that title, so currently the Bernhard album is at "Without You, I'm Nothing" (with a comma.) I never could get the hang of properly setting up a disambiguation page, so is there any way you could fix this for me? And maybe leave a message in my talk giving me some info on how to properly set up a disamb? Thanks a ton. Pacian 03:42, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

b) Where, exactly, was he born. Name the town! "Just outside" the Bronx has got to be a place you can name. Calling it NY state until someone clarifies.) I understand your comment about being born "outside The Bronx" but that's what his official website states in the Bio section. No specific information exists that I have been able to find about either his birthdate or birthplace. Nothing on IMDB, for example.

You really shouldn't protect a page you're editing. Also, you need to put the protected template on the article and list it on the Protected pages page. Also, you apparently got logged off when you posted on the Talk page that you had protected the page, because your signature is coming out as an anon. RickK 23:10, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

I personally don't think it's gotten to the protect stage yet, but you should unprotect it, list it on Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and then report that anon at WP:AN/3RR. When you do protect a page, put protected on the page, then follow the links to the List of protected pages, where you should list the page you've just protected. RickK 23:30, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)
