captioning photos

[edit]

If all content on Wikipedia must be verifiable, how are photos and images, added to to articles, to be verified? The photo attached to this article is not of the mountain Tapuae-o-Uenuku, consequently the caption is incorrect and its inclusion may be questioned. Any person comparing the image with a topographical contour map of the mountain can confirm this.

The mountain in the attached image is Manakau, in the Seaward kaikoura Range, which is across the large and deep valley of the Clarence River from Tapuae-o-Uenuku. (See - http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-42.227977,173.61866&z=14 )

The error can be explained - the mountain is regularly pointed out by pilots on passing domestic flights and hence attempts to photograph the peak are common. However it is not obvious to a viewer unfamiliar with the area to clearly identify which of many surrounding peaks is being referred to. Hughvannoorden (talk) 00:25, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I note that there is a good photo of Tapuae-o-Uenuku on the webite: [1] that is attributed to Hugh van Noorden. It would be great if the owner of this image could upload it into Wikimedia Commons, so it could then be used in this article. The Infobox in this article needs a photo of the peak. The photo of an adjacent peak is less than ideal. The same photo is currently used (incorrectly it seems) in Wikimedia Commons here C:Category:Mount Tapuaenuku. There is room for improvement of the Wikipedia article content, but getting the right photo would be a good start. --Marshelec (talk) 01:29, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Photo added to commons and inserted into the page. Now - how to add the photo to the infobox? and not the body of the article? Hughvannoorden (talk) 05:51, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the new photo - that's great. I have already restored the Infobox. The contents of the Infobox in the Wikimedia Copmmons Category are auto-generated ussing information from Wikidata. I have updated the details in Wikidata, so the auto-generated Infobox in Commons is also now showing the correct image. A final step is to seek the renaming of the photo in Commons that is incorrectly identified. I will look up the process for requesting this. I have done something similar previously but need to go back and find out how.--Marshelec (talk) 05:55, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thankyou for the help. I appreciate your patience with a newbie. :-) Hughvannoorden (talk) 06:00, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you are uploading images into Wikimeida Commons again, it is worth having a look at the available categories in advance. This makes it much easier to assign more specific categories that put the image where others will find it. In this case there were two detailed categories that were more appropriate than New Zealand and Mountain, and I selected these instead. See the assigned categories at the very bottom of the screen here: File:Tapuae o Uenuku.jpg
For some reason, the auto-generated Infobox in the Commons Category is not updating with the new image from Wikidata. Rather frustrating. I will check on this later.--Marshelec (talk) 06:15, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The correct image is now showing in the Wikimedia category infobox here: Category:Mount Tapuaenuku--Marshelec (talk) 07:44, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hughvannoorden: The image that you had pointed out as incorrectly identified has now been renamed and recategorised. See: File:Mount Manakau – from the air.jpg. Thanks for initiating this helpful improvement to this article and the photo collection.--Marshelec (talk) 07:33, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
