Flora first struck the island of Tobago as a Category 3 hurricane where it caused such great damage that it changed the economy of the island from cash-crop agriculture towards tourism and fishing. Flora then crossed the Caribbean Sea and strenghened to a Category 4 whand slammed into the southern

Better intro, more impact. Jdorje 01:10, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its at B-Glass, just a litte more will make it FA.Storm05
Not at all. Lede is too short, and impact is way too short for everywhere but Eastern Caribbean. Hurricanehink (talk) 18:17, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not an FA, but maybe, with a little more work, we could give it a GA nomintaion. Juliancolton 19:51, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Hurricane Flora

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Hurricane Flora's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "HPCMAX":

  • From Hurricane Arlene (1963): David M. Roth (2009). "Tropical Cyclone Point Maxima". Hydrometeorological Prediction Center. Retrieved September 6, 2009.
  • From List of wettest tropical cyclones by country: David Roth. Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Maxima. Retrieved on 2007-03-15.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 16:51, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Damage inconsistent between infobox and "Storm effects by region" table

[edit]

The info box states $528 million (1963 USD) of damage whereas the table states a total of $773.4 million, also 1963 USD. The infobox value doesn't have a reference. --5ives (talk) 06:18, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reassessment

[edit]
This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Hurricane Flora/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

I am reassessing this article for GAR as there are currently numerous issues present:

1) For one of the five deadliest hurricanes, with lasting effects on the economies and agricultures of the affected regions, the article is severely lacking in crucial information. As pointed out by @Cyclonebiskit: the impact sections, notably for Cuba, the second hardest hit country, are inadequate.
2) The aftermath for Cuba and Haiti, the two worst affected nations, is completely absent.
3) There are several important sources that have not been incorporated, which would also fleshen out these sections. A quick search brings up this and this book, which mention the amount of homeless across the Greater Antilles and the hurricane's long-lasting impacts on the agriculture. There are also some journal articles on the hurricane's effects, including on a malaria epidemic in Haiti. I haven't even begun checking for Spanish or French language sources.
4) Several sources may be outdated, poorly formatted or unresponsive (dead). Auree 07:26, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Edit - I found [1] this page, which has a ton of Cuba information and lists to two reliable sources, including an article from Granma. I especially like the image that shows a close-up of Flora's remarkable, rare path over Cuba. Surely something PD-friendly can be recreated with a modern satellite image and the best track. Auree 19:32, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another good source: Ciclón Flora en Cuba: el lazo mortal
Impact in Jamaica: History of Hurricanes and Floods in Jamaica p.6, HEAVY RAINFALL IN JAMAICA ASSOCIATED WITH HURRICANE FLORA 1963 AND TROPICAL STORM GILDA 1973, Mass Expulsion of Zooxanthellae from Jamaican Reef Communities after Hurricane Flora

Checked against the good article criteria.

[edit]
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
There is some slight overlinking throughout the article, but style-wise the article is otherwise in good shape.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
The sources that are used in the article are reliable and appropriate cited, although they could benefit from formatting cleanup
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
    See issues above.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
It is hard to find relevant images for storms this old, although there may be some floating around somewhere I found some images from Haiti, although an image for Cuba would be nice (see idea above)
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
